Rays edge Red Sox in 15 innings
May 25, 2014 - 6:27 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Cole Figueroa scored the winning run in the 15th inning to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the second of a three-game set. With Andrew Miller (1-4) on the mound, James Loney led off with a single up the middle. Figueroa came out to pinch run and Brandon Guyer laid down a bunt towards third that neither Miller nor third baseman Brock Holt played, leaving men at first and second.
Desmond Jennings tried to bunt several times, but swung away with two strikes and hit a chopper back to the mound. Miller fielded the ball and turned to get the runner at second, but his throw went into the outfield and Figueroa came home for the win.
"My job in that situation is to put up a zero however we get there," Miller said. "I didn't do it."
It was the longest game of the season for both teams as they combined to use a total of 13 pitchers, with Boston using eight.
The bullpens for both clubs shined, as Tampa's relievers tossed seven innings and gave up just one hit and three walks, striking out nine. Cesar Ramos (2-3) got the win as he pitched three innings and allowed one hit and two walks while striking out three.
Tampa starter David Price settled down from a rough first inning to toss eight frames, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Jake Peavy gave up five runs on eight hits over six innings for Boston.
"It was a tough first inning (for Price), easily could have given in or caved in, but came back and pitched extremely well, I mean beyond extremely well," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of Price.
Guyer went 4-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored and Logan Forsythe added three hits and two RBI for the Rays, who have won three straight.
A.J. Pierzynski hit a three-run home run with Mike Carp and Jonny Gomes each driving in a run for the Red Sox, who have now lost nine straight games for the first time since 2001.
Boston opened the game with a big first inning to take the lead as the first three batters reached base and Carp brought in the first run after getting hit by a pitch. Following Gomes' sac fly, Pierzynski smacked a pitch over the wall in right for his fourth home run and a 5-0 lead.
Tampa got a run back in the second on Forsythe's sac fly, and he made it a 5-2 game in the fourth with an RBI single that scored Guyer, who had doubled with one out.
The Rays tied the game in the fifth. With one out, David DeJesus singled and Evan Longoria followed with a base hit. Matt Joyce's single brought in one run, and Guyer smoked a double off the wall in left that brought in two more to even the score.
