Brewers wrap up series against Marlins
May 25, 2014 - 1:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - With Yovani Gallardo missing a turn in the rotation due to a sprained left ankle, the Milwaukee Brewers will turn to Jimmy Nelson in the finale of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins.Nelson, a 24-year-old right-hander, went 5-1 with a 1.71 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Nashville. A second-round selection by the Brewers in 2010, Nelson has watched opponents hit just .180 against him at the Triple-A level. He pitched in four games (1 start) last season and gave up a total of one run in 10 innings pitched.
The Brewers made room for Nelson on the roster by outrighting infielder Jeff Bianchi to Nashville.
Former Brewer Randy Wolf counters on the mound for the Marlins. The veteran lefty was signed by Miami after the team learned Jose Fernandez would sit out the remainder of the season due to Tommy John surgery. Wolf has thrown two games, both in relief, most recently two scoreless frames against Philadelphia. Wolf is also a former Phillie.
This will be Wolf's first start in the majors since Sept. 22, 2012 when he pitched for Baltimore in a game at Fenway Park. The Orioles beat the Red Sox that day, but Wolf didn't get a decision. In fact, Wolf's last victory in a starting role came when he pitched for Milwaukee, earlier that season on July 17 versus St. Louis.
In 16 career starts against the Brewers, Wolf is 5-4 with a 4.40 ERA.
Yesterday, Jacob Turner tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits and a walk to help the Marlins to a 2-1 win.
"He has great stuff," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He can win here and it's up to him. Hopefully that was a good step in that direction."
Steve Cishek recorded the final four outs to nail down his 10th save.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jeff Baker each knocked in a run for the Marlins, who have won three of their last four.
"It was a big win for us after a tough loss last night," said Redmond. "These guys keep finding a way to win and that's what it's all about."
Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta was the tough-luck loser, allowing one run on six hits over six innings with five strikeouts.
The Brewers have won five of the last six meetings with the Marlins.
