Struggling Rockies try to get untracked vs. Phillies

May 27, 2014 - 3:29 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - So far a nine-game road trip hasn't gone as planned for the Colorado Rockies and they'll try to get untracked Tuesday in the middle portion of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Rockies are 1-3 on the trip and have been outscored 16-0 in the past two games. They dropped a 7-0 decision in Atlanta on Sunday, then suffered a 9-0 beatdown by the Phillies on Memorial Day.

Jhoulys Chacin pitched the first five innings for the Rockies and was dealt the loss for giving up four runs and seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. It didn't help Chacin that Colorado finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

"I thought he was throwing the ball pretty well," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said of Chacin. "I feel like he's progressing every time out."

Nick Masset allowed two runs in relief and Rex Brothers was reached for three more out of the bullpen.

Charlie Blackmon and Troy Tulowitzki both had two hits, as the Rockies fell to 11-17 away from Coors Field this season. Troy Tulowitzki showed no signs of an ankle injury from the previous game and is batting an MLB-best .378.

Colorado, which is five games off the NL West lead and 7-8 against teams from the NL East, will also visit Cleveland for three games on this 10-day journey.

Jorge De La Rosa tries to pitch his Rockies back on track Tuesday and he is 5-3 with a 3.91 earned run average in 10 starts. De La Rosa pitched in a 2-2 tie versus San Francisco last Thursday and threw three scoreless innings. He entered the game on a personal five-game winning streak.

The left-hander, whose scoreless-innings streak is at 12, has a 2-3 record in five road outings this season and is just 1-4 with a 6.42 ERA in eight career games (6 starts) against the Phillies. De La Rosa, though, has allowed three earned runs in his last 14 1/3 innings pitched in this series.

Philadelphia broke out the bats in Monday's win and scored eight runs total in the previous four games. Ryan Howard had three hits, including a home run, and five RBI and John Mayberry Jr. hit a pinch-hit two-run blast. Chase Utley added three hits, three runs scored and drove in a run for the Phillies.

Ben Revere also had three hits and an RBI in the win, as the Phillies responded from Sunday's 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in which Josh Beckett tossed a no-hitter.

"Good bounce back game on the offensive side," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Good to see (Kyle) Kendrick was solid into the seventh against a good lineup."

Kendrick earned his first win since last Aug. 11 and hurled 6 2/3 shutout innings, scattering six hits with four walks and two K's. Kendrick entered the game 0-10 over his last 16 starts.

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon needs one more save for 300 in his career. He will eventually tie Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter and Jason Isringhausen for 24th on the all-time list.

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins is 15 hits shy of passing Mike Schmidt (2,234) for the most on the club's all-time list. Rollins was 0-for-4 with a run Monday.

The Phils, who are 8-6 against the NL West this season, improved to 2-2 on a stretch of 11 straight games at home and have won five of their last nine overall.

Cole Hamels gets the nod for the Phillies Tuesday and the 2008 World Series MVP will make his seventh start. Hamels, who started the season on the disabled list, is 1-2 in the first six outings with a 4.30 ERA, last pitched in Thursday's 4-3 loss at Miami and did not figure into the decision.

Hamels pitched well and gave up three runs in seven innings. struck out six and walked one. The left-hander had fanned 10 batters in each of his previous two trips to the hill and has allowed only five runs over the past three starts. He has made seven career starts against the Rockies, going 3-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 47 2/3 innings.

Philadelphia lost two of three at Colorado back in April and are 9-2 in the last 11 meetings between the clubs at Citizens Bank Park.
