White Sox hope Rienzo can bounce back vs. Padres
May 31, 2014 - 12:30 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Andre Rienzo tries to bounce back from his first loss of the season when the Chicago White Sox entertain the San Diego Padres Saturday afternoon to resume a three-game series.Rienzo suffered a 7-1 home loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday when he gave up six hits and five runs -- two earned -- over five innings. The 25-year-old Brazilian right-hander makes just his second start against a National League team. He beat the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 9.
Tyson Ross, who counters for the Padres, had his three-decision winning streak broken May 21 against Minnesota. The righty didn't get a decision Monday at Arizona when he surrendered nine hits and five runs -- four earned -- over five-plus frames.
Ross is 1-5 with a 2.81 ERA in 16 games (7 starts) in interleague play. He's 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA versus the White Sox, having won both those decisions in 2011 when he pitched for Oakland.
Last night, Yonder Alonso had a two-run homer and Ian Kennedy pitched six solid innings as the Padres picked up a 4-1 win.
Alonso went 3-for-4 and Cameron Maybin also homered, while Chris Denorfia and Carlos Quentin both contributed two hits for the Padres, who have won two of their last three games.
Kennedy (4-6) surrendered just one run on four hits and struck out nine in the first meeting between the two teams since 2005.
"I thought velocity on the fastball was good," Padres manager Bud Black said of Kennedy. "I thought he threw a good game, he set the tone."
Conor Gillaspie had two of Chicago's four hits. Starter John Danks (3-5) was tagged for two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk across seven frames for the White Sox, who entered the contest with a three-game winning streak.
"Made some mistakes and got burned for them, but all in all it was a good day," Danks said.
This is the first meeting between these two teams in Chicago since the White Sox won a three-game set in 2003.
