Venable leads Padres past White Sox
May 31, 2014 - 10:58 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Venable went 4-for-4 with two RBI as the San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago White Sox, 4-2, in the middle contest of a three-game set.Rene Rivera supplied two doubles and drove in a run while Alexi Amarista also had an RBI for the Padres, who have won three of their last four.
Tyson Ross (6-4) spun six solid frames for San Diego, allowing five hits and two runs -- one earned -- with five strikeouts.
"Maybe not as efficient as we've seen him, but overall, he was competing in a game against an opposition that was trying to get runs against him and he didn't give many up," said Padres manager Bud Black on Ross.
Dayan Viciedo had two hits and drove in a run as the White Sox dropped their second straight game. Andre Rienzo (4-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks across 3 1/3 innings.
"It's sputtering right now. We're just not getting that hit that gets you over the hump," commented White Sox manager Robin Ventura on his team's offense.
Yonder Alonso drew a walk to open the second and came home on Venable's double to right. Cameron Maybin reached on a fielder's choice and was replaced by pinch-runner Chris Denorfia before Rivera made it 2-0 with a double to left.
The White Sox cut the deficit in half in the home half. Alexei Ramirez and Paul Konerko both singled and Alejandro De Aza grounded into a double play that scored Ramirez from third.
In the third, Seth Smith and Chase Headley singled and Carlos Quentin walked to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Venable's single plated Smith, but Quentin was thrown out at home.
Chicago got within one again in the fifth after Viciedo doubled to score Adam Eaton, who reached on a fielding error to open the frame.
Venable doubled and Denorfia walked to open the sixth. Both runners moved up a base on Rivera's bunt and Amarista's sacrifice fly scored Venable, to give the Padres a 4-2 advantage.
Huston Street tossed a scoreless ninth for his 17th save in as many tries this season.
Game Notes
San Diego owns a 20-4 record this season when scoring four or more runs ... Maybin left the game in the second with right calf tightness ... The Padres have nine or more hits in a league-leading seven straight road games ... Ramirez extended his hitting streak to six games.
