Brewers seek series win over Diamondbacks
Jun 18, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Milwaukee Brewers try to win another series when they continue a four-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday from Chase Field. The Brewers won Monday's opener, 9-3, then recorded a 7-5 victory Tuesday night thanks to a five-run seventh inning highlighted by Jonathan Lucroy's grand slam. Lucroy homered twice and finished with three hits, while Scooter Gennett ended 3-for-5 with a run scored.
"I think the at-bat Luc had was probably the best at-bat I've ever seen," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Lucroy's third career grand slam.
Aramis Ramirez belted a solo home run for the Brewers, winners in 13 of the last 20 games and owners of a 3 1/2-game lead over St. Louis atop the NL Central. The Brewers, who erased an early 3-0 hole, are 14-7-2 in series play, including 5-1-2 over the last eight series.
Milwaukee is 23-14 on the road and 7-3-1 in series play as the guest. Kyle Lohse started for the Brew Crew last night and earned the win despite giving up four runs -- three earned -- in six innings. Francisco Rodriguez labored through a shaky ninth inning to record his 22nd save and gave up three hits and a run with two strikeouts.
Matt Garza gets the nod for Milwaukee Wednesday and he is 4-4 with a 4.17 earned run average. Garza is 2-0 in his previous five outings and did not record a decision in last Friday's 6-5 loss to Cincinnati, as he gave up five runs (1 earned) in seven innings.
Garza has fared well in five career starts against the Diamondbacks, going 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA. He is, however, 1-2 in six road assignments this season.
The D'backs are 0-2 so far on their nine-game homestand and lost for the sixth time in seven tries on Tuesday. Evan Marshall suffered the loss for yielding three runs during the seventh inning and starter Mike Bolsinger was reached for three runs in the first 6 1/3 frames.
Roger Kieschnick homered, Martin Prado drove in two runs and Gerardo Parra ended 2-for-5 with a run scored for Arizona. Paul Goldschmidt had a 10-game hitting streak snapped.
"They beat us again, and that's disappointing," D'backs manager Kirk Gibson said.
Gibson's club is still 8-4 in 12 games versus Milwaukee since the start of the 2013 campaign and hopes Wade Miley can improve on that when he takes the mound Wednesday. Miley is only 3-6 with a 4.71 ERA and is winless (0-3) in his past six trips to the bump. He has recorded two straight no-decisions and gave up four runs in five innings of a 5-4 loss at Houston last Thursday.
Miley has a poor 1-5 mark in eight starts at home and is 3-1 with a 5.70 ERA in four career starts against Milwaukee.
Arizona won two of three at Miller Park when these teams faced each other from May 5-7.
