Campana's hit in 9th boosts Diamondbacks over Brewers
Jun 19, 2014 - 6:42 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Tony Campana's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-3, in the third test of a four-game series. The Brewers sent Brandon Kintzler (1-3) to the mound in the ninth. Martin Prado hit a one-out double to left-center field, advanced to third on David Peralta's groundout and raced home on Campana's ground single up the middle.
"Martin's at third, so I knew all I had to do was find a way to put a ball in play and beat it to first," the speedy Campana said. "So just getting a ball in play, hitting it on the ground [was key], because hitting it in the air pretty good wasn't working."
Campana's hit made a winner out of Brad Ziegler (3-1), who tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Wade Miley got the start and gave up three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and four walks over 7 2/3 innings.
Milwaukee starter Matt Garza allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits while striking out four over 7 2/3 innings.
Arizona jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Gerardo Parra led off with a triple and raced home on Chris Owings' infield single. The D'backs put men on the corners with one out for Aaron Hill, who hit a grounder to short. Milwaukee failed to turn a double play and Paul Goldschmidt scored.
The Diamondbacks plated another run in the third. Owings tripled off the wall in center and jogged home on Goldschmidt's single up the middle.
The Brewers tied things up in the fourth on Khris Davis' three-run homer. Jonathan Lucroy and Carlos Gomez started with consecutive singles. After Aramis Ramirez struck out looking, Davis smacked Miley's offering over the wall in right-center field.
"We didn't do a lot offensively," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We just had the one inning with Davis hitting a three-run homer. Besides that, we didn't swing the bats very well."
The D'backs stranded a runner on third in the eighth when Will Smith fanned Miguel Montero.
Game Notes
Gomez has now reached base safely in 31 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the majors. He returned to the lineup after missing two games with a sore hamstring ... It was Campana's first major league walk-off hit.
