Ryu tries to stay on a roll as Dodgers wrap set with Padres
Jun 22, 2014 - 2:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu seeks a sixth victory in seven starts, one that would give the Los Angeles Dodgers a series win in Sunday's finale of a three-game set with the San Diego Padres.Ryu had a four-start winning streak snapped with a 5-0 setback in Cincinnati on June 11, but returned to the win column on Monday with a 6-1 decision over Colorado. The lefty yielded one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings.
Ryu has gone 8-3 with a 3.18 earned run average this year and has a solid 1-0 mark and 0.68 ERA in two previous meetings with the Padres. The 27-year-old has held them to a run on 11 hits and four walks over 13 1/3 innings.
San Diego turns to Eric Stults hoping the left-hander can secure his first victory since May 10.
Stults has a 7.76 ERA over his last six outings and has dropped four starts in a row as well as six straight decisions. He yielded four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and a walk over five innings of a 6-1 setback at Seattle on Tuesday. Two of the hits he allowed were home runs.
The 34-year-old is 2-9 with a 5.76 ERA on the season and 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA in five previous meetings with the Dodgers, who he spent his first four major league seasons with from 2006-09.
The Dodgers evened this series with a 4-2 victory on Saturday, with Josh Beckett logging seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball with eight strikeouts.
Beckett has now held opponents without a run in three of his last six starts, including his first career no-hitter against the Phillies on May 25.
Hanley Ramirez had two hits and two RBI and Dee Gordon scored twice, stole his MLB-leading 39th base and drove in a run for the Dodgers, winners in six of eight.
"Any time (Gordon) gets on base, we know our chances of scoring go way up," Beckett said. "He's trying to get on base every time. It puts on a little pressure, guys behind him get better pitches to hit."
Beckett departed with a 3-0 lead and the Dodgers made it 4-0 in the top of the eighth but Los Angeles' bullpen nearly coughed up the lead.
Cameron Maybin led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple off Paul Maholm. The next two batters were retired but Seth Smith walked and Brandon League took over for Maholm, serving up an RBI single to Tommy Medica. Rene Rivera followed with an RBI single, but Jake Goebbert grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Kenley Jansen worked a scoreless ninth, bouncing back from Friday's blown save and collecting his 21st save of the season.
"The last few games we've been swinging the bats a little bit better," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "Hopefully it continues. Lot of baseball left this season."
The Dodgers broke through with a pair of runs in the third inning against San Diego starter Tyson Ross, who allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over seven innings.
San Diego had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Los Angeles won two of three games at San Diego to start the season and is 10-3 in the previous 13 matchups in the series.
