Alvarez, Marlins edge Phillies

Jun 26, 2014 - 3:06 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Henderson Alvarez tossed an impressive 6 2/3 innings to guide the Miami Marlins to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the third contest of a four-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Alvarez (5-3), who hasn't lost an outing since May 11 at San Diego, allowed two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and two walks to pick up his first road win in his last nine starts, dating back to Sept. 14, 2013 at Citi Field.

"I thought he pitched very well," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "He battled and made some pitches when he needed to."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two and Marcell Ozuna had an RBI and scored a run for the Marlins, who lost three of four coming into the game.

Coming off his 24th career complete game, A.J. Burnett (5-7) yielded three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings to absorb the loss.

"He pitched very well," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "He had good enough stuff to pitch a shutout tonight."

Marlon Byrd finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Chase Utley and Domonic Brown each recorded an RBI for the Phillies, who have lost four of their last five.

Alvarez escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second, and tThe Marlins scored all three runs in the fourth after a Brown miscue in left field. Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee both knocked one-out base hits. With two outs, Brown misjudged an Ozuna line-drive double to allow the first run of the game to score. Saltalamacchia then followed with a double to center that made it 3-0.

In the fifth, Utley delivered a deep sacrifice fly to center with the bases loaded to plate Jimmy Rollins. Ryan Howard flied out to end the inning.

Byrd led off the sixth with his third single of the game and moved to second on a groundout. Brown lined an RBI base hit to center to pull the Phillies within one.

After shortstop Ed Lucas kept the seventh inning alive with a fielding error on an Utley grounder, reliever Mike Dunn was able to get Howard to ground out to second with runners on the corners to keep the Marlins ahead.

Steve Cishek struck out the side in the ninth to capture his 18th save of the season.
