Mets turn to deGrom in finale with Marlins

Jul 13, 2014 - 12:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom's first career victory came against the Marlins. The right-hander tries for a repeat performance of that June 21 start on Sunday afternoon when he leads the New York Mets against Miami in the conclusion of a three-game series.

The Mets will try to sweep the set at Citi Field after a 7-1 win Friday and 5-4 come-from-behind triumph yesterday.

The first major league win for deGrom came when he worked seven innings of shutout ball in a 4-0 win. He gave up five hits and three walks while striking out seven.

The most recent start for deGrom resulted in a career high-tying 11 strikeouts over seven shutout frames in a victory over Atlanta Tuesday.

Brad Hand counters on the hill for the Marlins. The lefty hasn't posted a victory since Sept. 18, 2013 at Philadelphia. Hand was moved from the bullpen back to the rotation this month, but hasn't recorded a decision after facing the Phillies and Diamondbacks. He limited Arizona to one unearned run Tuesday in Miami's 2-1 win.

In 19 career starts, Hand is 1-11 with a 5.01 ERA. In seven career games (three starts) against the Mets, Hand is 0-2 with a 2.95 ERA.

Yesterday, Eric Campbell's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Mets to victory. The Mets worked a two-out rally in the eighth to secure their sixth win in seven games. Travis d'Arnaud doubled to left off Mike Dunn (7-5) to set up Campbell, who pinch-hit for Kirk Nieuwenhuis and poked the game-winning hit into center.

"Everyone always says hitting is contagious," said Campbell. "That's the kind of roll we're on right now. We're all getting big hits and driving in runs."

Vic Black (2-2) earned the win for a scoreless inning of relief and Jenrry Mejia closed the door in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

Chris Young homered in the win, while Ruben Tejada and Juan Lagares each knocked in a run.

Christian Yelich hit a solo home run for the Marlins, who have lost four of their last five. Marcell Ozuna, Donovan Solano and Garrett Jones each had an RBI in the setback.

"They today got two big hits off the bench and weren't able to match the big hits," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

The Mets are 7-5 against the Marlins this season and have won the last four meetings.
