Surging Mets complete sweep of Marlins

Jul 14, 2014 - 12:31 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Curtis Granderson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to help the New York Mets sweep the Miami Marlins with a 9-1 decision.

Jacob deGrom (3-5) went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

David Wright and Chris Young each knocked in a pair of runs for the Mets, who have won seven of their last eight and finished their homestand at 8-2.

"These guys just stepped it up, got the offense and the pitching going at the same time," New York manager Terry Collins said.

Brad Hand (0-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over four innings of work.

Miami has dropped its past five games against New York and enters the All-Star break losing five of six overall.

"We didn't pitch well at all and they just kept adding on runs," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

The Mets opened the scoring in the second inning. Lucas Duda led off with a double, advanced to third on a bunt single from Juan Lagares and scored on Young's sacrifice fly to center which gave New York a 1-0 lead.

DeGrom got the first two outs of the fourth, then Casey McGehee collected Miami's first hit of the day on a single to center. Garrett Jones followed with a double to right and Marcell Ozuna kept the rally alive with an infield single that plated McGehee. Ed Lucas couldn't keep the momentum going, however, striking out to end the inning.

The Mets right-hander helped his own cause in the home fourth with his first career RBI.

Young walked with one out and Hand intentionally walked Ruben Tejada two batters later in an attempt to work through the pitcher to get out of the inning.

DeGrom had other ideas, though, ripping a 2-1 fastball up the middle to break the tie. Granderson followed with a ground-rule double that pushed the margin to 3-1.

New York added another run in the fifth courtesy of doubles from Wright and Lagares.

Wright knocked a ground-rule double to lead off the bottom of the inning and moved to third on Duda's flyout. Lagares then stepped in and drove one to the gap in right center, where Ozuna got turned around and couldn't haul it in as Wright easily crossed home for a 4-1 lead.

Wright doubled again in the sixth to knock in Granderson, who reached on a one-out single, for a 5-1 edge.

New York continued to pile it on in the eighth with a four-run inning.

Wright walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and Duda singled to center in the next at-bat to chase Granderson home. Young and Anthony Recker hit back-to-back RBI singles later in the inning to account for the final margin.
