Giants turn to Bumgarner in second-half opener vs. Marlins
Jul 18, 2014 - 2:58 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants will begin their second half of the season on the east coast, starting with Friday's opener of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. The Giants will also visit Philadelphia for four games and hope Bumgarner can get the trek started on a high note. Bumgarner has thrived on the road this season as evidenced by his 6-2 record and 1.98 earned run average in 10 chances. He is 10-7 overall with a 3.47 ERA.
Bumgarner ended a personal three-game losing streak in Sunday's 8-4 win versus Arizona and was touched for four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has given up four or more runs (19 total) in his last four starts, and helped his own cause with a grand slam.
The left-handed Bumgarner is winless (0-2) in four career starts against Miami and has a 5.09 ERA in those games.
San Francisco has alternated wins and losses in the last six games, and won two of three versus Arizona before the All-Star break. In Sunday's 8-4 win over the Diamondbacks, Bumgarner and Buster Posey each hit grand slams and Pablo Sandoval finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.
It is the first time in MLB history that a team's starting catcher and pitcher each hit a grand slam in the same game
"It's almost like running an American League lineup out there," Giants catcher Buster Posey said after the game.
The Giants sit one game behind Los Angeles for the NL West lead.
Meanwhile, Miami has lost four in a row and seven of 10 games.
The Marlins were swept in three games by the New York Mets before the All-Star break and dropped a 9-1 decision on Sunday. Brad Hand was saddled with the loss and gave up three runs in four innings of work.
Hand has not won since Sept. 18, 2013 at Philadelphia
"We didn't pitch well at all and they just kept adding on runs," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
Marcell Ozuna knocked in the lone run for the Marlins.
Nathan Eovaldi gets the call for the Marlins Friday and has a 5-4 record to go along with a 3.61 earned run average. Eovaldi is 1-2 in his last eight appearances and did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 loss at Arizona last Wednesday, when he delivered seven innings of one-run ball.
Eovaldi has faced the Giants four times -- all starts -- in his career and is 1-3 with a lofty 12.27 ERA.
The Marlins and Giants split a four-game set back in May at AT&T Park.
