Greinke takes mound for Dodgers in Milwaukee
Aug 9, 2014 - 1:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Greinke tries to pitch the Los Angeles Dodgers back into the win column Saturday in the second installment of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. The Dodgers dropped a 9-3 decision in Friday's series opener and hope Greinke can stem the tide tonight. Greinke is 12-7 with a 2.71 earned run average and has lost three of his last four decisions, including Monday's 5-0 loss to the LA Angels in which he permitted five runs (3 earned) in seven innings.
Greinke, a former Brewer, is 6-5 in 13 road assignments this season and 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in two career games (1 start) against Milwaukee.
Los Angeles unveiled its newest acquisition on Friday in right-hander Roberto Hernandez, who pitched well in his debut. Acquired in a trade with Philadelphia a few days ago, Hernandez limited the Brewers to a pair of runs in six innings for the no-decision.
Brandon League was dealt the loss in relief for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who had won three straight and 10 of their last 13 games.
Adrian Gonzalez homered and finished 3-for-3 with two RBI. Andre Ethier drove in the other run for Los Angeles, which remained 3 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco in the division standings. The Giants lost at Kansas City Friday.
Dodgers star Yasiel Puig went 0-for-4 with a run scored in defeat. Hanley Ramirez left Friday's game with tightness down the right side of his body and is expected to undergo an MRI Saturday.
"One swing, and it tied up on me," said Ramirez. "I tried to play. (Manager Don Mattingly) wanted to be careful and took me out of the game to get treatment. What he did, I think, was smart. He doesn't want me to get worse."
Ramirez's injury comes a day after starting pitcher Josh Beckett was placed on the disabled list with a hip issue. Beckett's setback led to the trade for Hernandez with the Phillies.
Meanwhile, the Brewers have won two straight and three of four games, and have a 1 1/2-game lead on Pittsburgh in the NL Central. St. Louis is two games behind.
Rickie Weeks hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Brewers posted a four-spot in the seventh to pad their lead. Gerardo Parra had two hits and two RBI and Jeremy Jeffress got the win in relief.
"I thought it was a big one to win," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We know how good this team is and how good they've been playing, and we know the pitching that we're going to face the next couple of nights. So it's important to win this game."
Kyle Lohse started for Milwaukee and was sharp through six innings, holding the Dodgers to just a run with two K's and two walks.
The Brewers are 10-7-2 in series play at Miller Park this season and will send Mike Fiers to the mound Saturday. Fiers will make his first start of the season and has seen action in four relief appearances, going 0-1 with a 2.57 earned run average. He pitched four innings in a 4-2, 16-inning loss to Washington on June 24 and gave up two runs for the loss.
Fiers, a right-hander, is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA in two career games (1 start) against the Dodgers.
The Dodgers and Brewers are meeting for the first time this season and Los Angeles took four of six matchups a year ago. Milwaukee went 6-1 in 2012.
