Rays target sweep of Cubs at Wrigley
Aug 10, 2014 - 1:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Rays will go for an Interleague sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon as the weekend set comes to a close at Wrigley Field.Behind a masterful pitching performance from their young hurler, the Rays captured a 4-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Jake Odorizzi (8-9) shined over six innings of work, allowing three hits, no walks and no runs while striking out nine.
"The first at-bat itself I felt like I was throwing it where I wanted to, and once it carries over to the next batter you kind of know you have that going today," Odorizzi said.
The dominance carried over to the bullpen, as Kirby Yates and Jake McGee combined to strike out six batters in three scoreless innings.
Yunel Escobar collected a pair of hits and was responsible for three of the team's RBI. Ben Zobrist (2-for-3, two runs) and Evan Longoria (1-for-4, two runs, RBI) were also solid.
Edwin Jackson (6-12) was saddled with the loss, allowing five hits, three walks and four runs (three earned) in six innings.
The Cubs managed just five hits, with Starlin Castro picking up two of them.
Alex Cobb, who is 7-6 with a 3.52 ERA this season, will toe the rubber for the Rays on Sunday.
Cobb has pitched very well in recent weeks in allowing two runs or less in five straight starts, and three runs or less in seven in a row. He wasn't his sharpest his last time out, however, allowing eight hits, four walks and two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Oakland on Aug. 4.
Cobb has 96 strikeouts in 102 1/3 innings on the campaign and has earned six of his seven wins on the road.
The Cubs will answer with Travis Wood, who's struggled all season long to the tune of a 7-9 record with a 5.08 ERA.
Wood earned his first quality start since late June in his most recent outing, allowing three earned runs in six innings of work in a no-decision against the Rockies on Aug. 5.
The southpaw has never pitched against the Rays, winners in three straight.
