Tribe, D-backs set to play two
Aug 13, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Rain washed away the opener of a quick series between the Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks, so the two clubs will play a doubleheader Wednesday at Progressive Field.Cleveland was ahead 1-0 with one out in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double by Jason Kipnis. Then the game entered a rain delay and was ultimately postponed.
The Indians have won two in a row following a four-game slide and hope to stay in contention for a playoff spot. They are 4 1/2 games out in the wild card and five games behind for the AL Central lead.
Trevor Bauer gets the call for the Indians this afternoon and he is 4-7 with a 4.52 earned run average in 17 starts. Bauer is winless (0-3) in his past four trips to the hill and lasted only 3 1/3 innings in a 10-6 loss against the New York Yankees in the Bronx on Friday.
He allowed five runs and six hits to the Yankees and has been reached for at least three runs in his previous five appearances. Bauer, a right-hander, is 3-2 in nine home starts and 0-4 in eight day assignments. He has never faced the Diamondbacks.
Josh Tomlin gets the start for the Tribe in the nightcap and he has a 5-8 mark with a 4.68 earned run average. Tomlin is 0-3 in his previous six trips to the hill and 1-6 in the past seven decisions. The right-hander faced the D-backs once in his career on June 28, 2011 and threw seven innings of two-run ball in a 6-4 loss. He did not figure into the decision.
Tomlin has made nine appearances (8 starts) at home this season, going 2-5 with a 5.85 ERA.
The Indians will host Baltimore next for three games at Progressive Field.
Meanwhile, Arizona took two of three games versus Colorado before heading to Cleveland and will also make stops in Miami and Washington on this trek.
The D-backs are 3-6 in their last nine games and will hand the ball to Andrew Chafin in the first game. Chafin will make his major league debut and was recalled from Triple-A Reno last week.
Chafin, a left-hander, was 4-5 with a 5.40 ERA in 14 starts for Reno.
Vidal Nuno will make his seventh start with the D-backs since coming over via trade with the Yankees and is 0-3 with a 4.05 ERA in six starts. Nuno allowed five runs in four innings of a 6-2 loss to Kansas City last Thursday and the D-backs have lost all of his six outings.
The left-handed Nuno won his only career start against the Indians, tossing five shutout innings of three-hit ball.
Arizona split two games with the Indians at home back in June.
