Angels turn to Weaver in finale vs. Phils

Aug 13, 2014 - 2:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver aims to bounce back from his first loss since mid-June on Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim conclude a two-game set with the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.

Weaver had won five straight decisions before a 4-2 setback to Boston on Friday. It was the right-hander's first loss since June 16, halting a nine- start unbeaten streak in which the Angels were 8-1.

Weaver yielded four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings versus the Red Sox, falling to 12-7 with a 3.68 earned run average on the year.

The 31-year-old faced the Phillies for the first and only time in his career back on June 22, 2008 and won. He yielded a single run over 5 1/3 innings.

The Phillies turn to 37-year-old A.J. Burnett, who is winless in his past five starts with an 0-4 mark.

Burnett hurled eight scoreless innings in the lone no-decision during his winless streak versus San Francisco on July 23, but has yielded 19 earned runs in the four setbacks that have spanned 17 2/3 frames.

The righty lost his third straight outing on Friday versus the New York Mets, giving up five runs on 11 hits and two walks over six frames with eight strikeouts. The loss dropped Burnett to 6-12 with a 4.29 ERA.

Burnett lost to the Angels back on May 14, charged with three runs on seven hits and five walks over five innings of a 3-0 decision. He fell to 2-3 with a 4.81 ERA in nine starts against Los Angeles.

Burnett will try to keep the Angels from having a big inning like they did in Tuesday's opener, when they plated all of their runs in the sixth inning on the way to a 7-2 win.

Kole Calhoun began the seven-run sixth inning with a homer, then capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single. His effort helped make a winner out of C.J. Wilson, who yielded two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

"I don't think I've ever had two hits in an inning," said Calhoun. "Tonight was big for C.J. and the team."

The Angels came in having lost five of six, but Tuesday's win kept them 3 1/2 games back of the Oakland Athletics for first place in the American League West.

Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd each drove in a run for Philadelphia, which has dropped four of its last five.

Antonio Bastardo gave up five runs -- four earned -- on four hits during the sixth inning in relief of starter Jerome Williams, who made his first start with the Phillies since being claimed off waivers from Texas on Sunday. Williams allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames.

"Jerome did a nice job. He showed his experience, hitting his spots with his fastball," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We just couldn't finish out the sixth inning."

The Angels swept a two-game set in Philadelphia from May 13-14 and have won eight in a row in this series since a loss to the Phils on June 9, 2003 in Anaheim.
