Diamondbacks try to sweep Padres out of Arizona
Aug 24, 2014 - 2:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks try to complete a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon. The Diamondbacks had lost six straight before winning Friday's opener, then posted a 5-2 victory last night. Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Arizona to the win.
The Padres, who fell to 2-7 on their 10-game road trip, tied the game in the top of the eighth on Yangervis Solarte's two-out, two-run single.
Arizona starter Vidal Nuno took a shutout into the eighth, though he remained winless since coming over from the New York Yankees in the Brandon McCarthy trade. He allowed only one hit -- a Cameron Maybin single -- through the first seven innings, but plunked Rymer Liriano with a pitch to open the eighth and gave up another base hit to Maybin before walking Alexi Amarista to load the bases.
Oliver Perez relieved Nuno and served up Solarte's bouncer up the middle after striking out Jedd Gyorko.
Gregorius took Kevin Quackenbush deep to right field in the home half of the frame. The blast followed a one-out walk to Alfredo Marte and a Jake Lamb single and was a relief for Gregorius, who came into the game just 2-for-36 in his last 10 contests.
"I thought it was just a line drive," Gregorius told Arizona's website. "It went over, and I'll take that."
Lamb hit his first major league homer earlier in the game as the D-backs beat the Padres for the eighth time in 11 meetings this season.
Chase Anderson hopes to pitch Arizona to the sweep, but he was thumped by the Washington Nationals last time out. The righty suffered his first setback since July 2 as he was drilled for six runs on six hits and three walks in two-plus innings of work.
Anderson fell to 7-5 with a 3.71 earned run average this season.
"He's pitched good for us, to be fair, but tonight wasn't his night," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "They put a lot of pressure on him and he wasn't able to make the pitch."
The 26-year-old faced the Padres for the first and only time on May 28 and picked up a victory, charged with four runs -- one earned -- over five innings.
Ian Kennedy counters against his former club coming off an 8-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Kennedy yielded six runs -- five earned -- over five innings on seven hits and a pair of walks.
The right-hander fell to 9-11 with a 3.72 ERA as he allowed more than three runs for the first time in five starts.
Kennedy, 29, pitched with Arizona for three-plus years before getting dealt to the Padres during last season. He is 1-1 against the Diamondbacks with a 6.06 ERA in three outings.
