White Sox target rare winning streak and series win over Tribe
Aug 28, 2014 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox hope to put together their first winning streak in nearly a month on Thursday evening as they conclude a three- game series with the Cleveland Indians. The White Sox halted a seven-game losing streak with Wednesday's 3-2 victory, keyed on by two RBI from Jose Abreu. The slugger singled home a run in the third inning one batter before Adam Dunn drove in a run on a double, then followed up Lonnie Chisenhall's game-tying homer in the top of the seventh for Cleveland, with a run-scoring single to center in the bottom of the frame.
Given minimal wiggle room, Hector Noesi notched the victory as he allowed just two runs over seven innings of work.
"Tonight he looked sharp. said White Sox manager Robin Ventura, citing an extra day of rest for Noesi. "I think his fastball was extra sharp tonight. It looked like he was sneaking it up on some people."
Michael Bourn finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Indians, who saw their three-game winning streak halted.
Corey Kluber gave up three runs on nine hits despite fanning eight over 6 1/3 frames.
The White Sox have not won consecutive games since July 31-Aug. 1 and hope to claim the series tonight behind John Danks, who is 9-8 with a 4.96 earned run average on the year.
The left-hander, though, saw his winless stretch reach five games (0-2) with a no-decision versus the New York Yankees on Friday. He gave up three runs on six hits and three walks in five innings of work.
Danks, 29, is 5-10 in his career with a 5.21 ERA in 21 meetings with the Indians, who counter with Carlos Carrasco.
Carrasco has been red-hot since rejoining the rotation, going 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in three starts.
The right-hander hurled back-to-back scoreless outings to begin that stretch, giving up a total of just five hits and striking out nine over 12 innings in two wins. He then got a no-decision versus Houston on Friday despite getting charged with only one run on two hits and two walks in six innings.
Carrasco also struck out eight versus the Astros, though his club lost 5-1. The 27-year-old himself sits at 5-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 33 games on the year, seven of those starts.
Carrasco is hoping his current surge can get him his first ever victory over the White Sox, who he is 0-4 against lifetime with a 6.81 ERA in seven games (6 starts).
The White Sox are 9-6 versus Cleveland this season, winning seven of nine in Chicago.
