Noesi targets another win in opener with Twins

Sep 2, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Hector Noesi will try to even his record for the season on Tuesday night when the Chicago White Sox begin a two-game set with the Minnesota Twins.

Noesi has won three of his last four decisions, including a 3-2 victory over Cleveland on Wednesday, and is now 8-9 with a 4.75 earned run average in 28 games this season. That includes 22 starts, all with the White Sox after earlier stints this year out of the bullpen for both Seattle and Texas.

Noesi held the Indians to a pair of runs on six hits and a walk in seven innings of work.

"Tonight he looked sharp, he had an extra day of rest," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I think his fastball was extra sharp tonight. It looked like he was sneaking it up on some people."

The right-hander has gone at least seven innings in five of his last seven outings, including a win over Minnesota on July 24. Noesi scattered a pair of runs over 7 2/3 innings and is 2-0 lifetime versus the Twins with a 3.60 ERA in five games (3 starts).

Chicago is coming off a split of a four-game series with Detroit, winning Sunday's finale 6-2. Jose Quintana hurled seven innings of two-run ball to win for the second time since late June.

Chicago pounded out 12 hits despite trading away its second regular in as many days prior to the game. The White Sox sent slugger Adam Dunn to Oakland in exchange for a minor league pitcher after having shipped outfielder Alejandro De Aza to Baltimore on Saturday.

Avisail Garcia led Chicago at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Adam Eaton and Carlos Sanchez had two hits and two runs scored.

"We're not a team of what our record shows. We all know that in here," said Eaton. "Hopefully we'll continue to get better and be a spoiler this upcoming month."

Jose Abreu extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth inning. The likely AL Rookie of the Year is hitting .320 on the season and is among baseball's leaders with 33 homers and 99 RBI.

He'll take his swings tonight against Minnesota's Tommy Milone, who is trying to secure his first victory since being acquired from Oakland.

Milone was 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 16 starts with the Athletics, but has gone 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in four starts with the Twins. He has not gotten a decision in back-to-back starts despite plenty of run support.

The left-hander gave up five runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits over 4 1/3 frames of his club's 20-6 win over Detroit on Aug. 22, then yielded four runs on nine hits and two walks in 5 1/3 frames on Thursday. Minnesota won that game in extra innings, 11-5.

Perhaps a meeting with the White Sox is what Milone needs as he is 1-0 against them lifetime in three starts, posting a 0.86 ERA as he has allowed just two runs over 21 innings.

In danger of getting swept in four games by Baltimore, Minnesota rebounded to win Monday's finale with the Orioles 6-4. Joe Mauer had three hits and four RBI, two of which came on a tie-breaking single in the eighth inning.

Minnesota's three-run eighth helped Phil Hughes join the Angels' Jered Weaver and Detroit's Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello as the American League's lone 15- game winners this season. The right-hander fired eight strong innings and allowed just five hits and three runs, all of which were unearned after an error in the seventh preceded Nick Hundley's game-tying homer.

"That's a good team over there, so to get that lead with the way Phil was pitching and then for them to tie it up and us to respond was great," Mauer said. "To come back and get this win will make for a better plane ride, for sure."

Glen Perkins served up a solo homer to Nelson Cruz in the ninth before holding on to record his 33rd save and earn the Twins just their second victory in nine games.

The Twins are 8-6 versus the White Sox this season.
