Kluber goes distance as Indians best White Sox
Sep 7, 2014 - 3:44 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Kluber bounced back with a terrific complete-game effort, while Jose Ramirez capped a three-hit night with a tie- breaking RBI triple that helped give the Cleveland Indians a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.Ramirez's drive off Zach Putnam (4-3) snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the seventh inning, with Michael Brantley following with an RBI single to back Kluber's third complete game of the season.
Kluber (14-9) yielded just five hits and one unearned run while striking out seven and not issuing a walk, stopping a three-start losing streak and moving the Indians within five games of Kansas City's lead atop the AL Central.
"He was great tonight," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Kluber. "He was moving the ball all over the place."
Brantley also finished 3-for-4 in the victory, with Carlos Santana adding a solo home run for Cleveland.
The White Sox were dealt a third straight loss despite a strong six innings out of Jose Quintana, who held the Indians to a run while fanning seven and keeping his team in the game.
The outcome changed once Putnam entered in the bottom of the seventh, however. The reliever walked Michael Bourn before Ramirez drilled a pitch off the right-field wall and hustled all the way to third prior to crossing the plate on Brantley's hit for a 3-1 Cleveland lead.
Kluber took it from there, setting the White Sox down in order in the eighth and giving up just a Conor Gillaspie single in the final frame. The right- hander set down 13 of the last 15 batters in closing out the contest.
"(Pitching coach Mickey Callaway) worked on my direction in the bullpen (before the game)," said Kluber. "It was a pretty easy adjustment, nothing major. I went out there tonight and I wasn't searching or anything. It felt comfortable."
Only an error by Jesus Aguilar prevented Kluber from a shutout. After Jordan Danks singled with one out in the third and stole second, the Indians first baseman mishandled a grounder off the bat of Adam Eaton as Danks rounded third and scored the game's initial run.
Santana drew Cleveland even in the bottom of the fourth by hammering a first- pitch fastball from Quintana into the left-field stands for his 25th homer of the season.
