D-backs go after series win against Padres

Sep 14, 2014 - 1:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After snapping their longest losing streak of the season, the Arizona Diamondbacks go for a series victory on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game set with the San Diego Padres.

The Diamondbacks halted a seven-game slide with Saturday's 10-4 victory, getting three hits and three RBI from Mark Trumbo. Pinch-hitter Jordan Pacheco drove in two runs and Ender Inciarte reached base three times while scoring twice.

D-backs starter Chase Anderson gave up two runs on four hits and three walks in five innings of work.

"Their approach has been really good the last couple nights," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Yangervis Solarte and Yasmani Grandal both smacked solo home runs for the Padres, who have dropped eight of 10. San Diego right-hander Tyson Ross got the start and was tagged for six runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks in only three innings.

"He's human," Padres manager Bud Black said of Ross' outing.

Odrisamer Despaigne will try to halt some recent troubles on the mound today as he gets his 15th start with the Padres.

The righty has pitched to a 5.27 earned run average and gone 0-3 over a five- start winless streak, facing Arizona twice in that span. He took a road loss to the Diamondbacks on Aug. 22, giving up three earned runs over five innings, and then got a no-decision against them at home on Sept. 2. Despaigne did pitch well in that outing, charged with only one run over seven innings.

Six days after that solid effort versus Arizona, Despaigne was hit hard by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 9-4 loss, yielding seven runs -- six earned -- over 4 1/3 innings as he failed to keep pace with Clayton Kershaw.

"My location wasn't there," said Despaigne. "With the kind of offense the Dodgers have, you can't get behind in counts. This was my second time facing Clayton. I like the challenge."

The 27-year-old is 3-6 on the year with a 3.55 ERA.

Arizona will start struggling righty Trevor Cahill, who has walked 30 batters over his last five outings.

Cahill comes into this start having lost three straight, losing a pair of games to the Los Angeles Dodgers around a setback to San Diego on Sept. 1. Versus the Padres, he gave up three runs on five hits and six walks over four innings.

The 26-year-old then battled the Dodgers on the road Sunday, yielding three runs on two hits and four walks in 5 2/3 frames of work.

"I felt good the first couple of innings, then everything fell apart," said Cahill.

Cahill is 3-11 with a save and 5.23 ERA in 29 games this season, including 14 starts, and is 2-4 lifetime versus the Padres with a 3.06 ERA.

Arizona is 11-7 against San Diego this season.
