Mets, Flores eye series win over Marlins

Sep 17, 2014 - 3:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Wilmer Flores and the New York Mets take aim at a series victory on Wednesday night in the rubber match of a three-game set with the Miami Marlins.

Flores sparked the Mets to a 9-1 win last night, hitting a pair of homers and driving in six runs in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

Viewed as a potential key part of the Mets' future plans, the 23-year-old Flores is looking to finish this season strong in an effort to become an everyday player in 2015. He has eight hits, three homers and 10 RBI in his past four games while batting .275 this month.

"It's good helping your team," Flores said. "I'm seeing the ball well right now."

Curtis Granderson had three hits and Ruben Tejada drove in a pair of runs for the Mets, who ended a three-game losing streak.

Bartolo Colon, back on the hill five days after getting ejected for the first time since 2003, gave up 12 hits but only one run in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Christian Yelich provided the lone Marlins run with an RBI single in the third inning. Starter Nathan Eovaldi was charged with six runs on six hits to lose for the sixth time in his last seven starts.

"(Eovaldi) didn't give us the start we needed," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "It was tough."

Miami had won two straight and tries to rebound tonight behind Henderson Alvarez, who is 10-6 with a 2.81 earned run average this year and searching for his first win since Aug. 22.

Alvarez returned from a strained left oblique that held him out of one start to get a solid no-decision versus Philadelphia on Friday. The righty gave up only one run over seven innings and did not issue a walk while striking out four.

Alvarez is 4-2 lifetime against the Mets with a 3.56 ERA in eight starts.

New York goes with Dillon Gee and the righty has won three of his past four starts.

That includes Friday versus Washington, though Gee lasted just 5 1/3 innings. He limited the damage to three runs despite nine hits and two walks allowed, getting just enough support to win a 4-3 decision.

Gee is 7-7 with a 3.80 ERA on the season and unbeaten lifetime against the Marlins, going 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in five starts.

New York has won eight of past 10 versus Miami.
