Latos seeks better results against Braves

Apr 13, 2015 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins hit the road for the first time in 2015 as they pay a visit to Turner Field on Monday night to begin a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves.

Miami was home for its first six games against the Braves and Tampa Bay Rays but managed only one victory. The Marlins are coming off Sunday's, 8-5, setback against a Rays team that piled up 14 hits. Starter Henderson Alvarez allowed four runs in five innings.

Now, the Marlins embark on a 10-game road trip against National League East foes Atlanta, New York and Philadelphia.

"We haven't played well really all week," manager Mike Redmond said. "We've got to dig deep right now and see what we're made of."

On the other hand, Atlanta's supposed rebuilding season is off to a 5-1 start after taking back-to-back series from the Marlins and Mets. The Braves traded away the likes of Jason Heyward, both Upton brothers, Evan Gattis, even closer Craig Kimbrel this offseason.

They were looking to improve their record to 6-0 on Sunday but wound up with a 4-3 loss as the top four hitters in the lineup combined to go just 1-for-16 without a walk. Starter Alex Wood struck out seven across 6 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits.

Reliever Juan Jaime got into a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, then Andrew McKirahan came on for his first big league appearance and gave up a sacrifice fly to Daniel Murphy to break a 3-3 tie.

"Six games in and we get our first loss on an 0-2 sac fly," left fielder Jonny Gomes said. "162-0, I don't think we were banking on that."

The Braves will get another crack at Mat Latos, whom they knocked around in Marlins Park last week with seven runs off six hits to chase the right-hander after only 2/3 of an inning, the shortest start of his career.

"There's no excuse for putting my team in a seven-run hole and embarrassing myself, throwing the ball down the middle of the plate," he said. "It's the worst start I've had in six years. It's ridiculous putting my team through that."

For Atlanta, Shelby Miller takes the hill after getting a no-decision in Miami last week. The right-hander worked several deep counts but pitched five scoreless innings and gave up just four hits. Miller owns a 2.44 career ERA in April across 12 starts.

The Braves outscored the Marlins 16-3 in sweeping the season-opening series in Miami.
