Utley leads Phils over Diamondbacks
May 17, 2015 - 5:06 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Utley looked like his old self on Saturday, driving in two runs to help the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks to extend their season-long win streak to four games.Utley's struggles this season have been well-documented. The six-time All-Star went 2-for-3, producing just his second multi-hit game of the season to up his average to .138.
Jeff Francoeur homered and Grady Sizemore had four hits for Philadelphia to back Jerome Williams (3-3), who allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits over five innings.
"Grady just seems to be clicking right now," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "He's seeing the ball real well, just squaring it up."
Paul Goldschmidt and Yasmany Tomas went deep for Arizona, which welcomed back young ace Archie Bradley. And despite an uneven performance, the D-backs are just happy to have Bradley, who got hit in the face with a line drive on April 28, back on the mound.
Bradley (2-1) gave up four runs on five hits in two-plus innings.
Francoeur's two-out solo homer to left opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning.
The Phillies padded their lead in the third. Freddy Galvis drew his second walk of the game and Sizemore singled to put two on for Ryan Howard, who doubled in a run off the wall in right. Maikel Franco then drew a walk and with the bases loaded, Utley slapped an RBI single up the middle.
That was the last batter Bradley faced, but rain came down during the pitching change and led to a one hour and 15 minute delay.
"I just wanted to get back out there and help the guys," Williams said.
When play resumed, J.C. Ramirez toed the rubber and got Francoeur to ground into a double-play that brought home Howard for the fourth run.
Arizona chipped away, plating a run in the fourth on Nick Ahmed's RBI single and two in the fifth when Goldschmidt smacked a two-run homer to left.
But the Phillies replaced those runs with three of their own in the fifth. Utley was once again the catalyst, ripping a double down the right field line to plate Franco, who picked up his first hit of the season with a single one at-bat earlier. Carlos Ruiz and Andres Blanco added RBI doubles later in the inning to make it 7-3.
Former Phillie Tuffy Gosewisch knocked in Chris Owings with a single in the sixth inning, and Tomas crushed his first career long ball in the eighth to produce the final tally.
Jonathan Papelbon, who recently became Philadelphia's all-time saves leader, struck out two in a clean ninth to record his ninth save.
Game Notes
