Rockies target rare series win
May 17, 2015 - 1:57 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies eye their first series win in more than a month on Sunday when they close out a four-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.Colorado has followed up its 11-game losing streak by taking two of three from the Dodgers. On Saturday, the Rockies hit three home runs and Jorge De La Rosa spun a gem on the mound in their 7-1 victory.
De La Rosa (1-2) hadn't pitched past the fifth inning in any of his previous four starts this season, and the Rockies were 0-4 in those appearances. But the 34-year-old was dialed in Saturday, yielding just two hits and no walks against one of the most potent lineups in baseball.
Carlos Gonzalez, Daniel Descalso and Nolan Arenado all homered in the win.
Zack Greinke (5-1) took the hard-luck loss after allowing just one run on four hits in six innings of work. Greinke was betrayed by his offense and reliever Sergio Santos, who gave up five runs in two innings out of the bullpen.
"His pitches move a lot, that's why you see a lot of swings and misses," said Gonzalez. "But once in a while guys make mistakes in the big leagues, and they're going to pay for it."
The Dodgers, who have lost three of four since a five-game winning streak, will try to manage a split in this series behind right-hander Mike Bolsinger, who picked up his first win of the season his last time out. Bolsinger beat Miami on Tuesday, holding the Marlins to a run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He is 1-0 on the year with a 1.59 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, will turn to struggling righty Kyle Kendrick, who is 1-4 with a 7.65 ERA and hasn't won since tossing seven scoreless innings on Opening Day. Kendrick, though, pitched well in a no-decision on Tuesday in Anaheim, as he allowed two runs in seven innings of a 5-2 loss.
He had given up at least four runs in five starts before that and surrendered six or more in four of those outings.
"I wanted to establish my sinker and changeup early and work off of that," Kendrick said. "I really wanted to just focus on pitching down, because when I've gotten hit, everything was up."
Kendrick is 5-7 lifetime versus the Dodgers with a 6.86 ERA in 14 games (11 starts).
On the injury front, Colorado was without shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on Saturday and he could miss Sunday's finale with tightness in his left quadriceps.
The Dodgers are 6-2 against the Rockies this season and have won nine of 11 and 17 of the last 22 meetings between the NL West foes.
