Red-hot Twins go after sixth straight win
May 29, 2015 - 11:46 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - People around baseball are starting to take notice of the Minnesota Twins. The Twins go after a sixth straight win on Friday when they open a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Target Field.
Minnesota moved into a first-place tie with the Kansas City Royals atop the American League Central on Wednesday, as it completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 6-4 win.
The Twins have won five in a row.
"It was obviously a really nice series for us," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "You get a chance and get a sweep against a good team like that. We were able to manufacture some runs early with some really good at-bats."
Since opening the year with just one win through seven games, the Twins have gone 27-12, including wins in 19 of their last 25 games to move into first place. Their 18 wins this month are the most since winning 18 in August of 2010 and this is the latest in a season the Twins have had a share of first place since winning the division in 2010.
"I think we can sustain it," Minnesota general manager Terry Ryan told the team's website. "Obviously a lot of things contribute to that. We haven't had a losing streak to test us yet, but we've gotten pummeled a couple of times and bounced right back."
Hoping to keep the Twins rolling on Friday will be righty Trevor May, who is 3-3 with a 4.95 ERA. May defeated Chicago on Saturday, holding the White Sox to three runs and six hits in seven innings. He also fanned nine batters without a walk in his first win since April 30.
"I just came out really aggressive," May said. "Having a big crowd out today was fun. I was just trying to be as aggressive as possible."
Toronto, meanwhile, was denied a sweep in its series with the White Sox, as it dropped a 5-3 decision in 10 innings on Wednesday.
Josh Donaldson sent the game to extra innings with a ninth inning home run and finished with two RBI, while Chris Colabello went 3-for-5 for a Toronto team that had amassed 24 runs over a three-game win streak.
"We feel like we're playing pretty well," Donaldson said. "I'm not here to make excuses, but a ball gets into the sun and scores two runs, that's just baseball. At the end of the day, we kept pushing and gave ourselves a chance to win, but obviously they ended up scoring a few more runs in the end."
Getting the call for the Blue Jays on Friday will be veteran left-hander Mark Buehrle, who has lost four of his last six starts. Buehrle lost to Seattle on Saturday despite a solid showing that saw him allow three runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings. He also walked three batters and fell to 5-4 with a 5.13 ERA.
Buehrle has faced Minnesota 52 times (50 starts) and is 28-19 against them with a 3.67 ERA.
Minnesota won four of six from the Blue Jays last season.
