Miller tries to bounce back in the desert
Jun 2, 2015 - 12:16 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Atlanta righty Shelby Miller tries to bounce back from a tough loss his last time out when the Braves resume a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.Miller absorbed the loss to San Francisco on Thursday, but it was through no fault of his own, as he surrendered just a run - a solo home run - and five hits in seven innings of a 7-0 loss. He is 5-2 on the year with a 1.48 ERA.
"That's something I can't do right there," Miller said of his lone mistake. "I'm taking the blame on that loss. That's a bad time to give it up."
Despite the loss, Miller capped off a terrific month of May that saw him pitch to a 1.20 ERA, while limiting opponents to a .167 batting average. Miller has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his first 10 starts.
"He had a tremendous, tremendous outing," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "You figure every time you go out there and give up just one run, you've got a real good chance to win a ballgame."
Arizona, meanwhile, will turn to righty Josh Collmenter, who is 3-5 with a 5.05 ERA. Collmenter did not get a decision in St. Louis on Wednesday, but pitched well, giving up two runs in five innings of his team's 4-3 loss.
He is 1-3 in seven games (4 starts) versus the Braves with a 2.81 ERA.
On Monday, Alex Wood used his bat and his arm to lead Atlanta to an 8-1 victory. Freddie Freeman went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI for the Braves, who have won three in a row.
Freeman now has an 11-game hitting streak against D-backs dating back to May 15, 2013.
Wood (4-2), who hit a two-run single in the second inning, gave up one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and zero walks over eight full frames. The left-hander improved to 4-0 on the road this season.
"I commanded the fastball pretty well," Wood said. "I got some early contact and moved in and out (of the zone)."
Archie Bradley (2-3) allowed five runs on eight hits with three walks over five innings for the Diamondbacks, who were coming off a 7-6, 17-inning loss to the Brewers on Sunday.
"I have to stay positive," Bradley said. "I trust in myself, but the results aren't there."
Arizona split its six games with the Braves last season.
