Mariners hope to put brakes on six-game losing streak

Jun 5, 2015 - 11:16 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Seattle Mariners try to put the brakes on a six-game losing streak Friday when they continue their four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Safeco Field.

Seattle's woes continued on Thursday, as Jake Elmore drove in the eventual game- winner in the Rays' 2-1 triumph.

Erasmo Ramirez (4-2) allowed a run on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts, while Steven Souza Jr. drove in the other run for the Rays, who have won three straight and five of six.

Robinson Cano drove in the only run of the game for the Mariners, who have dropped seven of eight. Roenis Elias (2-3) allowed two runs on five hits over eight innings to take the loss.

"We got men on base tonight but we just couldn't bring them in," said Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon. "It's frustrating, that's for sure, but I believe that at some point we're going to start driving them in."

New Mariner Mark Trumbo went 2-for-4 in his debut. The team acquired him and pitcher Vidal Nuno from the Diamondbacks on Wednesday in exchange for catcher Welington Castillo, pitcher Dominic Leone and minor leaguers Gabby Guerrero and Jack Reinheimer.

Getting the call for the Mariners on Friday will be left-hander J.A. Happ, who is 3-1 with a 3.70 ERA, but has not recorded a decision in his last four trips to the hill.

Happ was again not a factor on Sunday against Cleveland, as he allowed two runs and eight hits in five innings of his team's 6-3 loss. The Mariners are 2-2 in his last four starts.

Happ is 2-2 in eight games (7 starts) versus the Rays with a 5.35 ERA.

Tampa, meanwhile, will counter with righty Jake Odorizzi, who won for the first time in five starts his last time out. Odorizzi beat the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, as he surrendered four runs and seven hits - 3 home runs - in six innings to improve to 4-5 to go along with a 2.61 ERA.

"It's nice to get a win again that's for sure," said Odorizzi, who had pitched to a 2.45 ERA since his last win back on May 4. "It's odd that it's the most runs I've given up all year and get a win for it. I guess if that's what it takes to get a win then I'll be happy to do this every time out if it gives us a win each time out."

Odorizzi is 1-1 in two starts against Seattle and has yielded just one earned run to them in 13 innings (0.69 ERA).

Seattle swept a three-game set from the Rays last week.
