Rockies aim to stay hot at plate vs. Marlins

Jun 5, 2015 - 2:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies will resume their 10-game homestand Friday with the first of three straight meetings with the Miami Marlins.

The Rockies split a four-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin this residency and posted a 7-6 triumph Wednesday night.

Colorado needed three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to prevail, as Michael McKenry scored on a bases-loaded walk, Charlie Blackmon crossed the plate on a passed ball and DJ LeMahieu came home on a sacrifice fly for the game-winning run.

Troy Tulowitzki had a big night with a home run and five RBI, while Blackmon finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Rockies, winners in nine of their last 12 games.

"We've been fighting to the last out in every game," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I think this (win) speaks volumes to what we're all about."

John Axford picked up the win with a scoreless ninth inning and starting pitcher Chad Bettis lasted six innings, charged with two runs -- one earned -- with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Rockies have scored four or more runs in eight straight games and 14 times in the last 15 contests. They will also host St. Louis on this stay.

Taking the mound for Colorado Friday will be Eddie Butler, who is 3-5 with a 4.22 earned run average in 10 starts. Butler was 0-4 in five starts until beating Philadelphia on Saturday with six innings of one-run ball in a 5-2 triumph.

Butler has never faced the Marlins and is 1-2 with a 5.02 ERA in three starts at Coors Field this season.

Miami has won two in a row and four of six games, and took the final two meetings of a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs.

In Wednesday's 7-3 defeat of the visiting Cubs, Giancarlo Stanton and Jeff Baker hit back-to- back home runs and Martin Prado drove in two runs. Dan Haren allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings for the win and is 6-2 on the season.

"It was good to see us throw up a crooked number," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said.

The Marlins, who will also visit Toronto on this trek, hope Tom Koehler can pitch the club to victory Friday. Koehler has a 3-3 record and a 4.01 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) and lasted only 3 1/3 innings in Saturday's 9-5 win over the New York Mets. He gave up five runs and seven hits.

Koehler has walked four batters in consecutive outings and is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three career starts against Colorado. He has a 1-2 mark in five road assignments this season.

Miami went 4-3 against Colorado last season and the two ballclubs will play four games in south Florida next week.
