Rockies and Marlins set for rubber match

Jun 7, 2015 - 1:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins square off Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game series at Coors Field.

The Marlins won Friday's opener by a 6-2 score, then the Rockies evened the set with Saturday's 10-5 triumph.

Wilin Rosario's two home runs and seven strong innings from Chris Rusin led the way for Colorado, which has alternated wins and losses over the last seven games. Rusin impressed in his second start of the season, holding the Marlins to a pair of runs on seven hits and racking up a career-best eight strikeouts, including four of Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

The left-hander was backed by a Colorado offense that teed off on Marlins starter David Phelps. Rosario finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, Carlos Gonzalez belted a three-run homer and Nolan Arenado added a two-run triple in the rout.

"(Rusin) did a great job on the mound, keeping guys off-balance and getting quick outs," Gonzalez said. "For us, offensively, just jumping right out of the gate is important. That's how this team is built. We know we can produce a lot of runs."

Colorado pounded out 17 hits on the afternoon, with Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu each recording three along with two runs scored.

The Rockies will host St. Louis for three games on this homestand.

Kyle Kendrick hopes to get that taste of victory back when he takes the ball Sunday for the Rockies. Kendrick, whose Saturday start was pushed back, was hammered for six runs (5 earned) and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of an 11-4 defeat to Los Angeles on Monday.

Kendrick, who beat Cincinnati the previous time out on May 27, fell to 2-7 in 11 starts with a 6.55 earned run average. The right-hander has allowed 15 home runs this season and five in his last three games. Kendrick has faced the Marlins plenty of times from his days in Philadelphia and is 14-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 26 career games (21 starts).

Colorado is 3-8 when Kendrick takes the mound.

The Marlins had their three-game winning streak stopped last night and were led by Marcell Ozuna's three hits. Jeff Baker drove in two runs in defeat and starter Phelps was torched for nine runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

"I think I made three quality pitches all day, and it was the first at-bat to Carlos Gonzalez. That was really it," said Phelps of his outing. "Really just a terrible game."

Miami will head to Toronto for three games next.

Jose Urena is still in search of his first major league win and gets the call for Miami on Sunday. Urena is 0-2 with a 7.24 earned run average in four games (2 starts) and lost to the Chicago Cubs on Monday, allowing three runs in six innings of a 5-1 loss.

Urena has an 0-1 mark and a 9.39 ERA in three road assignments (1 start).

Miami went 4-3 against Colorado last season and the two ballclubs will play four games in south Florida next week.
