Reds try for sweep of struggling Phillies

Jun 10, 2015 - 12:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds will try to complete their second sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies in three years on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a three-game set.

The Reds have stretched their winning streak to three straight by taking the first two contests of this series, including last night's 11-2 rout that featured five home runs. Three of those came off the bat of Joey Votto.

Votto drove in four runs and scored four times as he joined Johnny Bench as the only players in Reds history with three three-homer games over their career. Votto is hitting .300 this season with 13 homers and 35 RBI.

"It's very cliche to say it, but any time you're alongside a name like that, it's an honor, it's meaningful," Votto told Cincinnati's website. "I'm humbled by it. I'm certainly not in his class, but to do something that he's done before is meaningful to me."

Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart also homered as part of a 13-hit attack and Anthony DeSclafani hurled 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts.

It wasn't all good news as the Reds were without center fielder Billy Hamilton due to a left wrist injury and saw second baseman Brandon Phillips exit after two innings because of a strained left groin.

Aaron Harang gave up four home runs on Tuesday en route to his fourth straight loss. He was charged with seven runs on seven hits over six innings.

Philadelphia has lost five of six and 14 of its last 18 overall. The Phillies will try to avoid being swept by the Reds for the first time since April 15-17, 2013 in Cincinnati.

After struggling on Friday in his major league debut, 23-year-old Jon Moscot gets the call again this afternoon for the Reds.

Stepping in to replace the injured Raisel Iglesias (oblique), Moscot was called up from Triple-A Louisville to face the San Diego Padres and took a 6-2 loss. He was charged with four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings, giving up two homes and striking out three.

The right-hander walked in a run in the first inning and allowed solo homers in the second and third inning, but still managed to keep his club in the ball game as he retired 11 of the last 12 batters faced.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit nervous out there. Everyone told me when I got here that I belonged here, but when you get out on that mound and you have a third deck in the stadium, it takes over a little bit," Moscot said. "I wasn't pitching my game that first inning, I just normally attack hitters and I was kind of trying to be too fine."

Moscot is 7-1 with a 3.15 earned run average in nine starts with Louisville this season.

With just one victory over his past eight starts, Jerome Williams looks to get himself on track today for the Phillies.

Philadelphia is just 1-7 over Williams' last eight outings, with the right- hander 1-4 with a 6.81 ERA over that span. He is 3-5 in 12 starts overall this year with a 5.68 ERA.

Williams has made it past five innings only once during his current eight- start stretch and logged just 4 1/3 frames on Friday in a no-decision against San Francisco. He yielded four runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings, giving up two homers for a second straight start.

The 33-year-old is 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA in six career meetings with the Reds, including four starts.
