Rockies try to cool off Marlins slugger Stanton

Jun 12, 2015 - 2:29 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies will try to slow down the red-hot Giancarlo Stanton on Friday when they continue a four-game set with the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.

Stanton, who leads the majors with 22 home runs and 55 RBI, has been on a tear of late, hitting .500 (8-for-16) with four homers, two doubles and eight RBI over his last four games.

"The whole idea was to get more traffic on in front of 'G' and give him run- producing situations," manager Dan Jennings said.

Stanton may have trouble on Friday, as he faces Colorado righty Kyle Kendrick, against whom he has gone just 3-for-29 with nine strikeouts. Stanton's .103 average against him is his worst against any pitcher whom he has faced 14 times and has only left the yard once against him.

Kendrick was marvelous against the Marlins on Sunday, but did not get a decision, despite giving up two runs in seven innings. He is 14-3 lifetime versus the Marlins with a 3/.41 ERA in 27 games (22 starts).

However, he is just 2-7 on the year with a 6.16 ERA.

Stanton's three-run homer backed eight scoreless innings from David Phelps on Thursday and Miami snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-0 win. Adeiny Hechavarria finished with three hits, Christian Yelich had two hits and two runs scored and Jeff Baker also homered for the Marlins, who won for just the second time in six tries.

Phelps (3-3) allowed just four hits and a walk, while striking out six to earn his first win since May 9.

"That's an outstanding outing by him to set the tone the way he did," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said of Phelps.

DJ LeMahieu had two of the Rockies' four hits against Phelps, while Colorado starter Chris Rusin (2-1) gave up six runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 frames.

Getting the call for the Marlins on Friday will be righty Jose Urena, who is 0-2 with a 5.49 ERA. Urena matched Kendrick last Sunday, allowing just a run and three hits in six innings, but also was not a factor in the final outcome.

Miami took two of three from the Rockies last weekend.
