Scherzer tries to avoid another loss vs. Brewers
Jun 14, 2015 - 1:27 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Scherzer will try to avoid something the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner has done only once in his career: lose three consecutive starts.Scherzer takes the mound Sunday afternoon for the Washington Nationals in the finale of a four-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. The 30-year-old right-hander lost to Toronto June 2, and on Tuesday gave up eight hits and four runs over 6 2/3 frames in a 6-1 defeat at Yankee Stadium.
Scherzer's only previous occasion losing three straight starts came May 3-14, 2010, when he pitched for the Tigers.
Scherzer has faced the Brewers three times in his career and is 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA. The last time he pitched against Milwaukee was 2009, when he played for Arizona.
Taylor Jungmann, a first-round pick by the Brewers in 2011, makes his second major league start. His MLB debut came Tuesday at Pittsburgh, and the 25-year- old righty was impressive. Jungmann turned in seven quality innings, allowed a lone run on just three hits while striking out five.
On Saturday, Joe Ross tossed eight strong innings to earn his first career win and lift the Nationals to a 7-2 victory. Ross (1-1) was pitching in just his second game in the majors after making his debut in a loss to the Cubs a week prior. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed just two runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
"I felt good," Ross said. "Around the fifth or sixth inning, I felt that I could throw where I wanted to."
Yunel Escobar and Wilson Ramos each hit two-run homers for the Nationals, who bounced back after dropping the first two games of the series.
Bryce Harper reached in all five plate appearances, but left the game with one out in the top of the ninth after getting hit in the knee by a Tyler Blazek fastball. He went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and one run scored.
Scooter Gennett and Jean Segura each drove in a run during the second inning for the Brewers, who had starter Jimmy Nelson (3-7) give up seven runs and 10 hits over five-plus frames.
"This is unacceptable," said Nelson. "I just have to be more consistent."
The Nationals won four of six meetings with the Brewers last season and the two clubs will meet again for three games at Nationals Park in late August.
