Eovaldi, Phelps square off in Miami

Jun 16, 2015 - 1:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Two members of December's multi-player trade between the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins will square off against one another on Tuesday night when the teams close the South Beach portion of this series at Marlins Park.

Following tonight's contest, the series will shift to New York for two games.

David Phelps draws the starting assignment for Miami, while Nathan Eovaldi will toe the rubber for New York. The Yankees acquired Eovaldi along with first baseman Garrett Jones and pitching prospect Domingo German from the Marlins on Dec. 19 in exchange for Phelps and infielder Martin Prado.

Eovaldi is 5-1 with a 4.13 ERA across 12 starts with the Yankees, after spending 2012-14 with the Marlins and going 13-27 with a 4.10 ERA. In his most recent outing, the right-hander took a no-decision against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday as he allowed three earned runs in seven innings.

Eovaldi now features a splitter, which he began working on last September at the direction of Marlins pitching coach Chuck Hernandez.

Meanwhile, Phelps is 3-3 with a 4.11 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) for Miami. The right-hander is looking to build on his best career start last time out, as he worked eight shutout innings against the Colorado Rockies. Phelps allowed only four hits while striking out six batters and walking just one.

The Marlins claimed a 2-1 win on Monday as they out-hit the Yankees, 10-3. Tom Koehler worked seven innings of one-run ball to out-duel New York's Masahiro Tanaka, who yielded two runs in seven innings.

"I thought going into the game -- since it's a different Yankee team that I grew up watching -- that maybe the adrenaline and the nerves wouldn't be there. But they were," said Koehler of facing his favorite team as a child.

Recent Triple-A callup Derek Dietrich sparked the Marlins offense with the go- ahead home run in the seventh, and he scored both of the team's runs.

The victory was the fourth in five games for Miami, while the Yankees have lost four of their last five games.

"Really good defensive plays on (Miami's) part," manager Joe Girardi said. "I though we actually swung the bats pretty good, and really didn't have much to show for it."
