Marlins score 8 in 1st to blow out Yankees

Jun 17, 2015 - 3:32 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Judging by the results of this game, the Miami Marlins appear to have gotten the better of their offseason trade with the New York Yankees.

Ex-Yankee David Phelps turned in seven strong innings against his former team, while Nathan Eovaldi didn't get out of the first in his return to Marlins Park as Miami rolled to a 12-2 rout over the scuffling Yankees.

Eovaldi (5-2) recorded only two outs while being tattooed for eight runs and nine hits in his first meeting with the Marlins since being involved in last December's five-player swap with New York, a deal that also sent Phelps from the Yankees to Miami.

Every Marlins position player had at least one hit during the opening-inning barrage to give Phelps (4-3) far more support than he needed. The right-hander had a shutout through five frames before surrendering single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Giancarlo Stanton hit his MLB-leading 24th home run in the lopsided win, a three-run blast in the fifth. Dee Gordon went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Marcell Ozuna and Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits each and put up two RBI apiece during the highest-scoring opening inning in Marlins history.

Brian McCann finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the Yankees' fifth loss in their last six following a season-high seven straight wins.

New York will attempt to bounce back when this four-game, home-and-home series shifts to the Bronx on Wednesday.

After retiring Gordon to begin Miami's half of the first, Eovaldi was tagged for seven consecutive hits as the Marlins put the game out of reach in an instant.

Ozuna knocked in the first two runs with a bases-loaded grounder through the right side of the infield. Justin Bour and J.T. Realmuto followed with RBI hits before Hechavarria hammered a hanging curve off the base of the wall in left for a two-run triple that quickly pushed the lead to 6-0.

Gordon singled Hechavarria home two batters later and came around on Derek Dietrich's double to deep right that finished off the shortest start of Eovaldi's career.

"I was looking forward to this start, and I felt good getting ready today. It's very frustrating," Eovaldi said afterward.

Chris Capuano was able to briefly stop the bleeding. He was removed with two on and two out in the bottom of the fifth, and Stanton promptly greeted new pitcher Chris Martin with a towering home run of the second-deck facade in right to increase Miami's margin to 11-0.

"There's only a few guys in this game who have the ability to go opposite field, upper tank, like that," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said of Stanton.

Phelps, meanwhile, was nearly perfect halfway through. McCann was erased on a double play after a second-inning single, and the Yankees' only other baserunner over four innings of play came on an error by Dietrich.

"To put up an 8-spot early, he could be little more free with how he attacked that lineup," Jennings said of Phelps.

New York finally broke through with a two-out surge in the sixth, as Didi Gregorius singled and Mark Teixeira walked in front of McCann's run-scoring hit to right.

Mason Williams doubled home Stephen Drew, who drew a walk against Phelps in the seventh, for the Yankees' other run.

Realmuto picked up his second RBI on the night with a two-out single in the eighth that plated Christian Yelich, his third run of the game.

Game Notes

The game was the first between starting pitchers traded for one another within a calendar year since current Marlin Mat Latos took the mound for Cincinnati against San Diego's Edinson Volquez on July 5, 2012. The last time it happened involving the Yankees was 1993, when Jim Abbott squared off against the Angels' Russ Springer on July 22 ... The Yankees have lost four straight games in National League parks for only the third time in franchise history and first since June 20-July 4, 2004 ... Stanton extended his hitting streak to nine games and has six homers and 15 RBI over the stretch ... Eovaldi, who went 13-27 in 2 1/2 seasons with Miami, fell to 0-5 in 13 career interleague starts.
