Mets, Jays take series up north

Jun 17, 2015 - 2:11 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After staying perfect at home against Toronto, the New York Mets head up north on Wednesday evening to resume their home-and-home series with the Blue Jays.

The Mets opened up this set with consecutive wins in New York over the Blue Jays, who had won 11 in a row overall heading into the series. But New York improved to 17-6 all-time against Toronto, winning all 11 meetings at home.

Tuesday's 3-2 victory finished off the home sweep for the Mets, who got seven scoreless innings from a previously-struggling Matt Harvey. The hurler gave up four hits and struck out six without a walk to finish off a 5-3 homestand for New York. Harvey also drove in a run.

"I made adjustments," said Harvey, who had allowed 20 runs over his previous four starts. "I kept my head down and kept working."

Ruben Tejada and Wilmer Flores each had an RBI for the Mets, who lead Washington by a half-game for first place in the NL East.

Bobby Parnell allowed a pair of inherited runners to score in the eighth inning, but finished out the inning and then retired the side in order in the ninth to record his first save since 2013.

Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion drove in the runs for the Blue Jays, while starter Scott Copeland lost after yielding three runs and eight hits over four innings.

"We made a run at it but we came up short," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

Drew Hutchison will try to put a rough start behind him tonight when he faces the Mets for the first time.

Hutchison recorded his shortest start of the season last time out, pulled after 2 1/3 innings in Boston. He yielded a career-high eight runs on nine hits, three of those homers, and three walks, but his offense got him off the hook as it clubbed the Blue Jays to a 13-10 win.

The right-hander posted his shortest outing since going 4 1/3 frames in Cleveland on May 3 and is 5-1 on the season despite a 5.75 earned run average. He is 1-0 with a 9.46 ERA in seven road starts.

Owner of a six-game winless stretch, Jon Niese gets the start for the Mets aiming to secure his first victory since May 9.

New York lost each of Niese's next five starts following his last win on May 9, with the hurler 0-4 with a 7.96 ERA over that span, before beating San Francisco 5-4 in his last outing on Thursday. Niese did not factor into that decision, charged with four runs -- two earned -- on five hits and two walks over seven innings.

"It was a good outing to build on. My stuff felt great," Niese said.

The left-hander is 3-6 with a 4.24 earned run average on the year and struggled in his lone previous start against the Blue Jays, slammed for eight runs over just three innings of a loss.
