Orioles open set with hosting Red Sox

Jun 23, 2015 - 2:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles will pay a visit to Fenway Park Tuesday to begin a three-game series against the host Boston Red Sox.

The Orioles won two of three games from the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend up north and recorded a 13-9 victory on Sunday.

Jimmy Paredes went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI, while Chris Davis homered and Ryan Flaherty drove in three runs. Manny Machado recorded three hits and knocked in two runs for the Orioles, who posted seven runs in the second inning and four runs in the ninth.

"Just had one of those feelings that it was going to be a slugfest. The ball was flying. Luckily we came out on top," said O's shortstop J.J. Hardy. "These last two (games) here were big just considering the team over there has been playing so good. This was a big series for us."

Darren O'Day picked up the win in relief and starter Chris Tillman was horrendous in only 1 1/3 innings, charged with six runs and six hits, including two homers.

Baltimore has won 13 of its last 17 games and is 2 1/2 games off the AL East lead.

Orioles outfielder Adam Jones was not in Sunday's starting lineup for the fourth time in six games because of a right shoulder injury. He is day-to-day and could land on the disabled list.

Ubaldo Jimenez gets the call for Baltimore Tuesday and the right-hander is 5-3 with a 3.27 earned run average in 13 starts. Jimenez has won back-to-back starts and allowed four runs (3 earned) in a 6-4 win at Philadelphia last Wednesday.

Jimenez has struggled in eight career starts against Boston, going 1-3 with an 8.42 ERA.

The Red Sox have won four of their last six games, and took two of three meetings with the Kansas City Royals this weekend at Kauffman Stadium.

Boston pounded the defending American League champions by a 13-2 score on Sunday, as Wade Miley threw six shutout innings and was backed by an offensive explosion. Mookie Betts, Brock Holt, Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts had three hits apiece and combined for nine RBI.

Betts, David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez all homered for the Red Sox.

"That's a good way to finish the road trip," Red Sox manager John Farrell remarked. "There were a number of really good at-bats, particularly the top three guys setting the tone for us."

The Red Sox went 3-2 on the trip.

Taking the mound for Boston Tuesday will be Joe Kelly, who is 2-4 with a 5.32 earned run average in 13 starts and 1-0 in his past four. Kelly did not record a decision in Wednesday's 5-2 loss at Atlanta and tossed five innings of two- run ball.

Kelly has made three career starts against Baltimore and is 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA. In six home starts, the righty is 1-2 with a 4.84 ERA.

The Orioles are 7-3 against the Red Sox this season and have prevailed in each of the last five matchups between AL East foes.
