Rangers return home to face A's

Jun 23, 2015 - 2:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers are back in Arlington and will start a three-game series Tuesday versus the Oakland Athletics.

The Rangers went 2-3 on a recent road trip against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox, and lost two of three in the Windy City this past weekend.

Gordon Beckham led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a home run off of Rangers reliever Alex Claudio. Leonys Martin tied the game at 2-2 for the Rangers on a leadoff home run in the seventh inning and Ryan Rua went deep for the Rangers, who are three games off the AL West lead.

"We would have liked to have come out winning all of them," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "But our guys competed well. We've got to find a way to right the offense."

Yovani Gallardo's five shutout innings went to waste and he has pitched 15- consecutive scoreless innings. Gallardo also notched his 17th straight game of three runs or fewer allowed, the longest such streak in club history.

Chi Chi Gonzalez draws the start for Texas and is 2-1 with a 0.90 earned run average in four starts. He is 0-1 in his last two starts after winning the first two, and did not record a decision in last Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Dodgers, charged with two runs in 8 1/3 innings.

Gonzalez faced Oakland in a 7-0 defeat on June 11 and was dealt the loss, despite allowing one run in seven innings.

The Athletics went 3-2 on their quick homestand versus San Diego and the L.A. Angels, and won the last two meetings of a three-game set with the Halos this weekend.

Scott Kazmir threw 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball to level his record at 4-4 and Tyler Clippard tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief for his 12th save. Brett Lawrie finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the A's, who have won six of their last eight games.

"We had a pretty spirited series overall," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "Three really hard-fought games."

Jesse Chavez will handle pitching duties for Oakland on Tuesday and he is 3-6 with a 2.52 earned run average in 15 games (11 starts). Chavez defeated San Diego his last time out and fired seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball with 11 strikeouts in a 16-2 rout on Wednesday.

Chavez is 1-1 with a 5.04 ERA in 12 career games (1 start) against Texas. The Rangers selected Chavez in the 2002 MLB Draft.

The A's are 6-4 against the Rangers this season.
