Buchholz, Ortiz lead Red Sox past Orioles

Jun 25, 2015 - 4:06 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz's two-run homer capped a big sixth inning that carried the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox overcame a 1-0 deficit by putting up five unearned runs off Bud Norris in the sixth, highlighted by Ortiz's blast and a tie-breaking two-run single from Dustin Pedroia, who injured his right hamstring while rounding the bag and immediately departed.

Boston lost Hanley Ramirez an inning earlier when the slugger was hit in the hand by a line drive while running the bases.

Despite the injuries, the Red Sox halted a six-game losing streak in the series behind the sixth-inning outburst and a strong start from Clay Buchholz (5-6). The right-hander scattered eight hits and fanned seven while allowing just one run in seven innings.

"It's always good to win, but when you lose two guys, it's tough," Buchholz said. "Those are two guys that are in the middle of our lineup. Hopefully it's just a little scare and nothing is really bad wrong with them."

Norris (2-6), removed with two out in the sixth, was hurt by his own error as well as a miscue from Chris Davis that opened the floodgates for Boston's scoring binge.

Jimmy Paredes and Ryan Flaherty had two hits each in the loss, just the Orioles' fourth in 16 games.

Norris had faced the minimum through three innings and yielded just one hit after four, but unraveled following Davis' misplay of Alejandro De Aza's leadoff grounder to first with Baltimore holding a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the sixth.

De Aza took second on a passed ball by Caleb Joseph and Norris bobbled Sandy Leon's bunt to put two aboard for Mookie Betts, who laced a base hit to right that knotted the score. After both runners advanced on a groundout, Pedroia drove in each with a sharp single to give Boston a 3-1 lead.

Ortiz then drilled Norris' 2-0 pitch over the wall in straightaway center for a sudden four-run advantage.

"I felt I could have gone a lot longer in that game, so it's a bit frustrating to know how that inning (turned out)," Norris said.

Flaherty doubled to start to seventh but was left stranded, and the Orioles went down in order against Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara over the final two innings.

Neither team had recorded an extra-base hit until Baltimore's Chris Parmelee doubled to open the top of the sixth with the game still scoreless. Davis singled him home two batters later to briefly put the Orioles ahead.

Buchholz had only one shaky inning prior to that, when three Orioles reached base in the first but all failed to score. Leon helped keep Baltimore off the board by throwing out Manny Machado attempting to steal after a leadoff single.

"He's been very dependable for us, and (he gave us) seven strong innings tonight," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Buchholz.

Ramirez singled to begin the bottom of the fifth prior to being struck in the left hand by a Xander Bogaerts line drive that prevented a potential scoring chance for the Red Sox.

Betts extended his career-best hitting streak to 11 games ... Boston's Brock Holt has reached base safely in 18 straight games after drawing a walk in four plate appearances ... Norris is 1-4 with an 8.81 ERA in seven starts against AL East teams this season ... Pedroia now has a 17-game hitting streak at home, the longest by a Red Sox player since Jacoby Ellsbury's 18-game run in 2011 ... Buchholz moved to 3-0 in five outings in June.
