Red Sox hope to rebound vs. Yankees
Apr 12, 2008 - 1:22 PM NY Yankees (6-5) at Boston (5-6) 3:55 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - In round one of 18 this season, Chien-Ming Wang pitched the New York Yankees to a decisive 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
The Red Sox will look to rebound when they host the Yankees in round two on Saturday.
While every game between the classic rivals has a playoff-like atmosphere, Wang sucked the air out of the Fenway Park faithful as he dominated, allowing just two hits in a complete-game victory.
Jason Giambi homered to snap a 1-1 tie and Jose Molina had a pair of doubles for New York.
The Red Sox hope to change their luck when they send ace Josh Beckett (0-1, 9.64 ERA) to the mound.
The righthander started the season on the disabled list after experiencing back spasms in spring training but made is debut against the Blue Jays last weekend, allowing five runs in 4 2/3 innings to suffer a loss.
Beckett had trouble with his command against Toronto, walking four batters. In 30 starts last season, he walked more than three batters just once and did not suffer his first loss of the season until June 14.
He has had mixed success against the Yankees since joining the Red Sox prior to the 2006 season, owning a 4-3 record with a 6.56 ERA in eight starts.
The Yankees will counter with veteran Mike Mussina (1-1, 3.09), who is coming off an encouraging start last Monday against Tampa Bay. The 39-year-old picked up his 251st career victory while allowing just one run and two hits in six innings.
New York shortstop Derek Jeter is not expected to play in this series as he continues to recover from a left quadriceps injury.
Boston slugger David Ortiz has yet to get on track and is batting .077 (3-for-39) thus far.
