Peavy looks to quiet Rockies' bats

Apr 17, 2008 - 2:09 PM Colorado (6-8) at San Diego (8-7) 10:05 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy takes the hill on Thursday looking to silence the suddenly hot bats of the Colorado Rockies.

Colorado entered Wednesday's game with just 46 runs - the lowest mark in the majors. However, Garrett Atkins had four hits and two RBI and Troy Tulowitzki drove in two runs in a 10-2 victory.

The Rockies, who were second in the National League with 860 runs last year, flexed their offensive muscle by scoring seven runs in the ninth inning.

Now they face one of the hottest pitchers in the game. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, Peavy (3-0, 1.64 ERA) has allowed just four earned runs in 22 innings.

Peavy will try to atone for his poor start against Colorado in a one-game playoff last October. The righthander allowed six runs and 10 hits in the 9-8 loss, ultimately decided in the 13th inning when closer Trevor Hoffman squandered a two-run lead.

While Peavy has had a strong start to the season, Colorado ace Jeff Francis has struggled mightily. Francis (0-2, 9.53) allowed seven runs and seven hits in five innings of a 8-2 loss to Arizona on Friday.
