Kapler's hit give Brewers win over Cards
Apr 23, 2008 - 12:32 AM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Gabe Kapler singled in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning Tuesday as the Milwaukee Brewers survived a bullpen meltdown to post a 9-8 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.Kapler lined a single into center field to plate Gabe Gross, who drew a one-out walk off Jason Isringhausen (1-1) and stole second.
"We had chances, they had chances," Isringhausen said. "Nobody could get a run across the board in extra innings. And then just a lazy curveball. He slapped it to the outfield. (It) wasn't that hard. If I make a good pitch, I get him out."
"This team needed that," said Gross, who was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays after the game.
Seth McClung (1-0) tossed a scoreless frame to record the win after the Brewers squandered a five-run lead in the late innings.
Rickie Weeks' three-run triple highlighted a four-run sixth that gave the Brewers an 8-3 lead.
But the trio of David Riske, Brian Shouse and Salomon Torres nearly squandered the lead in the seventh, when the Cardinals answered with four runs of their own.
St. Louis closed within 8-7 when Torres walked Albert Pujols with the bases loaded. But Torres recovered to strike out Ryan Ludwick to finally end the inning.
Milwaukee closer Eric Gagne, who has been booed early in the season, blew his fourth save when the tying run scored on a play in which Brewers could not complete a potential game-ending double play.
Gagne got himself in trouble when he plunked Cesar Izturis with a 3-2 pitch to start the ninth. Skip Schumaker followed with a single, putting runners on the corners.
Gagne struck out Rick Ankiel and got Pujols to hit a grounder to the left side of the infield. Third baseman Bill Hall ranged to his left to make the play and started what should have been a double play.
"Gagne threw the ball good," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "He was out of (the inning), but we didn't turn a double play for him. He's facing the best hitter in the National League and got him to hit into a double play. We just didn't turn it. The game should have been over right there."
But the return throw from second baseman Weeks was in the dirt and could not be handled by first baseman Prince Fielder, allowing Izturis to score the tying run.
"I just had a bad throw," Weeks said.
"We know what we are," Yost said of his team's defensive shortcomings. "And it's not only Rickie, it's all of us. We all continue to work defensively."
Gross made a bid to win it in the bottom of the ninth, but center fielder Ankiel tracked down his fly ball on the edge of the warning track.
Guillermo Mota finally provided the bullpen relief Yost was looking for, following Gagne with two scoreless innings.
Milwaukee starter Manny Parra left with a 4-3 lead, allowing three runs and nine hits in five innings.
St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse gave up four runs and eight hits in four innings.
"From the first inning, I didn't feel great," Lohse said. "But you've got to be able to pitch when you don't have your best stuff, and I wasn't able to do that today. A couple guys that I've got to get out, I let them get hits."
Brad Thompson tossed a scoreless fifth but failed to record an out in the sixth and was charged with all four runs in the inning.
"Four runs in an inning," Thompson said. "That's terrible. Our team battles back and I didn't give us a chance."
Due to an injury in the ninth to Izturis, Pujols spent the final four innings at second base, a position he was playing for the first time in his career. He made one putout after making the switch from first base
