Red Sox look to get back on track vs. Rays
Apr 25, 2008 - 1:16 PM Boston (15-9) at Tampa Bay (11-11) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - After dropping their last two games and losing nearly a player per day to the flu, the Boston Red Sox will visit the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday for the start of a three-game series.
The Red Sox did not send a single scheduled starter to the mound in their three-game series against the Angels due to a nasty flu bug sweeping the clubhouse. Josh Beckett was scratched from his start on Tuesday and Daisuke Matsuzaka fell victim on Wednesday.
Thursday's scheduled starter, Jon Lester pitched on three days rest Wednesday and rookie Justin Masterson made his major league debut in Thursday's 7-5 setback.
The bullpen was also hit by the bug, with Manny Delcarmen sitting out the first two games before returning and taking the loss Thursday. A thin relief corps surrendered leads in each of the last two games.
The Rays have not had any pitching problems of late, pulling their record back to .500 with a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at the Disney World complex. James Shields, Jason Hammell and Andy Sonnanstine each went at least six innings in their respective starts.
Tampa will welcome Matt Garza (0-0, 9.00) back to the rotation on Friday. The 24-year-old righthander has been on the disabled list since April 9 after experiencing nerve irritation in his right arm.
Boston will counter with veteran Tim Wakefield (2-0, 3.96). The knuckleballer has managed to escape the flu thus far and earned a win Sunday against Texas, allowing five runs in eight innings.
Wakefield has had more success against the Rays than any other team, compiling a 19-3 career mark with a 3.12 ERA. However, he allowed 11 earned runs in eight total innings in his last two starts against the division rivals last season.
