Final/10
Marlins' three-run 10th sinks Brewers
Apr 26, 2008 - 5:34 AM By Dave Cotey PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Wes Helms picked a fine time to get back at his former team.
Helms snapped a scoreless tie with an RBI groundout in the top of the 10th inning as the Florida Marlins beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-0, on Friday at Miller Park.
Helms, who played for the Brewers from 2003-05, was booed loudly each time he came to the plate.
"It doesn't bother me," Helms said. "I'll be honest with you. It motivates me more than it hurts me. It makes me want to go out there and beat them. If the fans want to do that to me - I busted my butt here for two years - then I want to beat them when I'm in town."
Cody Ross added a sacrifice fly and Mike Rabelo had an RBI single in the 10th as the Marlins won for the fifth time in their last seven games.
Hanley Ramirez began the decisive inning by drawing a leadoff walk from Guillermo Mota (1-1). After Dan Uggla popped out, Jeremy Hermida singled and Jorge Cantu walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Helms.
Helms hit a grounder to shortstop J.J. Hardy, whose throw to the plate was late.
"I got a good pitch to hit, I just rolled over on it," Helms said. "It turned out good, but I didn't want to do what I did. I just hit it in the right spot."
Marlins closer Kevin Gregg (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
"You take your hat off to (starter Scott) Olsen, to Gregg," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "They pitched great, they really did. It's not that we're swinging the bats that bad."
The late heroics overshadowed a pair of solid pitching performances from the starters.
Olsen allowed just four hits with five walks in 7 1/3 scoreless innings. The lanky lefthander has surrendered just one run in his last 21 1/3 innings but failed to win a career-high fifth consecutive decision.
"I don't care if I get the win or not," Olsen said. "As long as the team wins, we're good. It's fun around here. We're winning some games. Hopefully, we can continue this."
Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo, in his second start of the season, allowed six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings. He has allowed just one run in 14 frames this season.
"I was able to make pitches whenever I need them, but they had a great pitcher out there, too, making great pitches," Gallardo said. "It was pretty tough."
Jason Kendall finished with two hits for the Brewers, who already have played seven extra-inning contests this season.
