Final/11
Cardinals' pitching faces hot-hitting Cubs
May 2, 2008 - 2:07 PM Chicago Cubs (17-11) at St Louis (18-11) 8:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals open a three-game series with the rival Chicago Cubs on Friday, looking to continue their surprising success on the mound.
With a couple of starting pitchers nursing injuries, St. Louis has allowed a National League-best 104 runs this season.
The Cardinals have won five of their six three-game sets at home this season, but can expect a challenge from the rival Cubs, who have scored 6.2 runs per game - tops in the majors.
Adam Wainwright (3-1, 2.79 ERA) looks to continue his strong start to the season and keep the Chicago offense at bay when he takes the mound.
The righthander is coming off a complete game 4-3 victory over Houston last Saturday. Wainwright allowed three runs and five hits with six strikeouts, going the distance for the second time in his career.
Wainwright has not had much success in his career against the Cubs, posting a 7.50 ERA in 13 games - four starts - with an 0-3 record.
He will be opposed by Chicago starter Shawn Hill (1-0, 3.79), who has not pitched since April 23.
The lefthander gave up two runs and three hits, walking four over five innings. Hill earned a no-decision in Chicago's 7-6, 10-inning victory at Colorado.
The 28-year-old is 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA in four games - three starts - during his career against the Cardinals.
