Robertson, Tigers hope for turnaround against Royals
May 13, 2008 - 1:10 PM Detroit (16-22) at Kansas City (16-21) 8:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - Nate Robertson will attempt to turn his season around and lead the Detroit Tigers out of the American League Central basement when they visit the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
The Tigers started their season with lofty expectations but were swept by the Royals at Comerica Park in the first series, going on to drop seven straight games and 10 of 12 to begin the campaign.
Kansas City's pitching made sure Detroit's vaunted offense did not start the season on a roll, limiting them to five runs in three games.
The Tigers have yet to recover from their early season swoon, and Robertson (1-4, 6.64 ERA) has struggled. The veteran lefthander has allowed at least four runs in each start this season and has allowed a home run in six of seven outings.
He took the loss May 6 against the Boston Red Sox, allowing four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 frames. Robertson ranks last in the AL among all qualifiers in ERA, with teammates Justin Verlander (6.43) and Kenny Rogers (5.82) among the bottom five as well.
The Royals will counter with one of the best pitchers in the AL so far this season, youngster Zack Greinke (4-1, 1.80).
The 24-year-old righthander sits second in the AL in ERA and has allowed more than two earned runs just once this season - surrendering three in seven innings in a win last Wednesday against the Angels.
Greinke completed Kansas City's season-opening sweep of the Tigers on April 3, allowing one run and six hits in seven innings of a 4-1 victory.
