Verlander hopes to turn it around vs. Royals
May 14, 2008 - 1:51 PM Detroit (16-23) at Kansas City (17-21) 8:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers will look for a rare win Wednesday when they visit the Kansas City Royals.
The worst pitching team in the majors with a 5.03 ERA, the Tigers have also forgotten how to hit of late. Detroit has dropped eight of its last 10 games, managing a total of 16 runs in the losses.
Kansas City won the series opener on Tuesday and has taken all four games between the teams this season, including a season-opening sweep at Comerica Park.
Mark Teahen singled in the winning run in the eighth inning Tuesday off Francisco Cruceta as the Royals went on to a 3-2 victory. Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save and has yet to allow a run in 15 1/3 innings this season.
Detroit will look to take the second game behind ace Justin Verlander (1-6, 6.43 ERA). The righthander has been terrible this season, allowing four or more earned in seven of his eight starts.
He ranks in the bottom five in the American League in ERA along with teammates Kenny Rogers and Nate Robertson. Verlander's rough season began against the Royals, who knocked him around for four runs in six innings on Opening Day.
Kansas City will counter with rookie Luke Hochevar (2-2, 4.94). The righthander suffered a loss in his last outing, allowing four runs and five hits in seven innings against the Baltimore Orioles.
