Torrealba keys three-run sixth as Rockies down Giants

May 20, 2008 - 5:25 AM By Brady Delander PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

DENVER (Ticker) -- With the worst record against division opponents in the majors, the Colorado Rockies will take positive signs of life whenever and wherever they can get them.

Yorvit Torrealba hit a go-ahead, two-RBI double in the sixth to rally the Rockies past the slumping San Francisco Giants, 4-3, on Monday night at Coors field.

Colorado, which improved to 7-18 against National League West foes, is riding a three-game winning streak while the Giants have dropped a season-high six straight games.

"Maybe our confidence is back," Torrealba said. "Being home for a few series could change things."

Garrett Atkins, Clint Barmes and Matt Holliday recorded two hits, including a solo shot by Barmes in the fourth inning that first put the Rockies on the scoreboard.

"It's been something we've been trying to do all season, to get something going," Barmes said. "The last few games we've gotten some good pitching, played some good defense and had some timely hits. That's really what we've been waiting for and hoping for."

With his team trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Holliday opened the frame with a double before scoring on Atkins' run-scoring single to halve the deficit.

Three batters later, Torrealba lined a double to deep left, plating Atkins and Ryan Spilborghs.

"It's a great feeling to be able to come through, especially when the team is behind," Torrealba said. "We haven't really done that all year long and, hopefully, this here will get us going a little bit."

"That's a big hit for him," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "He needed a bit hit and he got one. Hopefully, that will give him some more confidence."

Jason Grilli (1-1) recorded the last two outs of the sixth to collect his first National League win since 2001, when he was a member of the Florida Marlins.

Two relievers bridged the gap to closer Brian Fuentes, who worked around a one-out single for his sixth save in eight chances.

"It's all the things we hadn't been doing previously," Fuentes said. "We haven't been giving up the big hits and we haven't been shut down in innings. We are doing those things now and it makes it more fun."

Randy Winn hit a first-inning solo homer to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and Fred Lewis hit two triples for the Giants (17-29), who are in the midst of their worst losing streak since dropping eight in a row from June 13-22, 2007.

"It was really a pretty good ballgame, really," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "We had some nice situations. ... We just made a mistake in the sixth."
