Johnson returns to the site of perfect game
May 24, 2008 - 12:58 PM Arizona (29-19) at Atlanta (26-22) 3:55 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - Randy Johnson returns to the site of his perfect game Saturday as the Arizona Diamondbacks continue their three-game set against the Atlanta Braves.
On May 18, 2004, a then-40-year-old Johnson struck out 13 en route to pitching the 17th perfect game in major league history, becoming the oldest pitcher to accomplish such a feat.
Since that historic occasion, the lefthander has been traded to the New York Yankees - where he endured two difficult seasons - only to find his way back to Arizona before the 2007 season.
While in New York, Johnson had surgery to repair a herniated disc following the 2006 season and underwent back surgery again last season.
The lefthander showed glimpses of his former dominating self in his last start, tossing a season-high seven scoreless innings during Sunday's 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
He will be opposed by Jorge Campillo (1-0, 0.99), who likely staved off a demotion to the minors with a strong outing in just his second career start. The righthander pitched six shutout innings in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the New York Mets, allowing just three hits and striking out seven.
