Maddux hopes to help Padres earn split with Reds
May 25, 2008 - 3:38 PM Cincinnati (23-27) at San Diego (18-33) 4:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The struggling San Diego Padres look to salvage a split of their four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.
San Diego, which has one more loss than Seattle (18-32), has lost 11 of its last 12 series. However, the Padres may have some reason for hope as Sunday's starter - Greg Maddux (3-4, 3.94 ERA) - has won six straight starts vs. Cincinnati.
The righthander did not factor in the decision in his last start, a 3-2 win over St. Louis on Tuesday. He allowed two runs and five hits over five frames in the win, continuing his string of strong outings at home this season, where he is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts.
That track record could come in handy against the Reds, who rank third in the National League with 55 homers this season.
Cincinnati counters with Matt Belisle (1-4, 6.75), who has lost three straight starts. The righthander allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings in a 4-1 setback to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.
